Album Review: Saturday Night, Sunday Morning by Jake Bugg

Chris Willman Music WriterThe irreverent wit of Kacey Musgraves’ first two albums has long since given way on the last couple to an earnestness and, most of all, a gravitas  about love — falling into it, on her last release, 2018’s Grammy-winning “Golden Hour,” and falling back out, in a big way, on the just-released “Star-Crossed.” She does allow herself one good laugh, though… not in the new record’s lyrics, but in its attendant merch.

There is an especially very telling, and actually chilling scene in Spencer, Pablo Larrain’s brilliantly imagined portrait of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) facing the crossroads of a long dead marriage during a Christmas holiday at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. Prince Charles (Jack Farthing), stands in an ornate room at one end of a pool table while his wife Diana, clearly miserable and almost dead in the eyes, stands far apart at the other end. They are not playing pool.

Self-billed as “a fable from a true tragedy”, Pablo Larrain’s “Spencer,” which had its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, hones in on the unravelling of Diana, Princess of Wales over three bitter days of Christmas in the Queen’s country house at Sandringham.

If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (★★★★☆) radiates strength and intensity. With a production assist from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Halsey layers dark, industrial elements over her sound.Reznor and Ross’ influence is palpable, but not overwhelming — this is still very much Halsey’s album.
