AFI Fest’s Full Lineup Includes World Premieres Of ‘Freud’s Last Session’ And ‘Albert Brooks: Defending My Life’

Few in the film industry may be as quietly prolific as Tyler Perry. And a lot of his success comes thanks to his “Madea” movies: totaling twelve in all since “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman” in 2005.

UPDATED with lineup additions, 11:01 AM: The American Film Institute today added some films to its 2023 lineup. The five films selected by Guest Artistic Director Greta Gerwig are All That Jazz, An American in Paris, Wings of Desire A Matter of Life and Death and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. She will introduce the latter two.

China’s Pingyao International Film Festival has announced the line-up for its seventh edition (October 11-18), which will open with Wei Shujun’s Only The River Flows and close with the world premiere of Fei Yu’s Football On The Roof. 

UPDATED, 11:34 a.m.: Sony Pictures Classics has firmed up release plans for its drama Freud’s Last Session, starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode, which charts the relationship between psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and author C.S. Lewis. Based on the stage play by Mark St. Germain, who wrote the script, the film opens in theaters in New York and L.A. December 22nd, with an expansion to follow in January.

“Leave the World Behind,” the new movie from Sam Esmail, creator of “Mr. Robot,” will receive its world premiere at the opening of the American Film Festival.

AFI Fest marks the end of the Fall film festival circuit before the industry shifts gears toward Awards season. And while that means there are plenty of titles at the Hollywood-set festival premiered elsewhere earlier in the year, it still offers some premieres of its own.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor European pay TV platform Sky has released the trailer for Sky Original film “Dance First,” ahead of its world premiere at San Sebastian Film Festival on Sept. 30. The film is directed by BAFTA and Academy Award winner James Marsh (“The Theory of Everything”) and written by BAFTA winner Neil Forsyth (“Guilt”).

Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions have revealed the full cast for the world premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a live stage show that’s based on the Netflix hit.

Tyler Perry’s life and career, will make its world premiere at this year’s AFI Fest. The Amazon Studios and Bekele Films documentary, directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, will debut on Friday, Oct. 27 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as one of the festival’s centerpiece screenings.

A new documentary about the prolific multihyphenate Tyler Perry will be AFI Fest’s centerpiece film next month. The American Film Institute said today that Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story will make its world premiere October 27 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
