Oscar winner Adrien Brody is set to make his London theater debut with The Fear of 13, a new play by Lindsey Ferrentino (Ugly Lies the Bone). Directed by Justin Martin (Prima Facie, Stranger Things: The First Shadow), The Fear of 13 will run from October 4 through November 30 at the Donmar Warehouse.
Based on the 2015 documentary film by David Sington, The Fear of 13 is the true story of Nick Yarris who in the early 1980s was charged with the kidnapping and attempted murder of a police officer in Pennsylvania. He was acquitted, but while awaiting trial became a suspect in a different case and was convicted of the abduction, rape and murder of a young woman and sentenced to death. He spent 22 years on death row in Pennsylvania and was released in 2004 when DNA evidence established his innocence.
The logline from the Donmar reads: “Nick’s got a story to tell you. About how a routine traffic stop turned into a conviction for murder. About how he spent the next 22 years on Death Row. About how he finally petitioned the court to ask not for an appeal, but for his execution date. And about what happened next…”
Brody told BBC News, “I love the theater, and although I have not been on the stage in many years, I have been searching for the right material and this was so clearly the one.”
The Pianist Oscar winner’s recent film and television credits include Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, and HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty and Succession.
The Fear of 13 is part of Donmar artistic director Tim Sheader’s inaugural season which also includes the UK premiere of double Tony-winning musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812; Backstroke starring Celia Imrie and Tamsin Greig; and Intimate Apparel starring
