Jessica Kiang The interlinked names of the lovers have an unusual power in Ramata-Toulaye Sy’s haunting, halting  “Banel & Adama.” They play over and over as a whispery lullaby on the soundtrack. They cover the sheets of paper on which Banel (Khady Mane) compulsively writes their names, like a schoolgirl practicing cursive on the name of her crush. There’s an innocence to it at the beginning, as though Banel, whose strange mind we mostly occupy, is simply delighting in the sound and shape of their togetherness. But that’s when “Banel & Adama” is a love story, and before it descends, a little too hesitantly but with a subtly seductive power nonetheless, into drought and madness and maybe, cosmic retribution. The sun-and-superstition-soaked tale of an African girl contending with fate and folk tradition has some precedent in Rungano Nyoni’s excellent “I Am Not a Witch.” But here, as the bright imagery begins to hint paradoxically at creeping darkness, we can no longer be sure that witchcraft is not exactly what is at work.

Charna Flam Netflix announced the return of “Is it Cake?” and the addition of its latest “Nailed It!” spinoff, “The Big Nailed It Baking Challenge,” with both to premiere on the platform this summer. “Is It Cake, Too?” will premiere on June 30. The Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST channel is expected to be available on “a number” of platforms but eOne has not cut any distribution deals as yet, according to the company. The channel will feature a slate of original celebrity-focused unscripted series, including “Encounter Party,” “Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!” and “Heroes’ Feast,” as well as catalog content including the 1980s “Dungeons & Dragons” animated series. In addition, the FAST channel is to feature third-party content from top internet creators and influencers with a focus on live gameplay.

The previously announced partnership between Delta and Paramount+ will see the streaming service behind shows like “1923” and “Star Trek: Picard” available to Delta SkyMiles members starting later this summer, the companies announced Thursday. Naman Ramachandran Canadian thriller “Exile” has been acquired by Electric Entertainment in the U.S., Vortex Media in Canada and Nicely Entertainment for international. The film, shot in Powell River, British Columbia, stars Adam Beach (“Power of the Dog,” “Suicide Squad”) as Ted Evans, a father struggling with his past who receives a threat from the man whose family he killed in a DUI. In order to protect his family when he is released from prison, Evans exiles himself and commits to a reclusive life; separating himself from the people he loves. His wife, Sara (Camille Sullivan, “Hunter Hunter”), believes the threat is a manifestation of her husband’s profound guilt. Determined to rebuild their family, Sara tracks down Ted to confront him, but she has no idea who he’s become or how real the threat may be.

Kim Murphy Adam McKay is partnering with Netflix again for his follow-up to “Don’t Look Up.” The streamer has acquired the director’s next feature comedy, titled “Average Height, Average Build,” which will star Robert Pattinson as a serial killer that looks to leverage American politicians to make murder easier. Amy Adams will star alongside Pattinson. She reunites with McKay after earning an Oscar nomination in best supporting actress for her turn as Lynne Cheney in their 2018 comedy “Vice.” The ensemble also includes Robert Downey Jr., Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler. Along with writing and directing, McKay will produce under his Hyperobject Industries banner with Kevin Messick. The film does not yet have an official release date.
