A Canadian Icon Confronts A Difficult Disease In ‘STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie’ Trailer

Naman Ramachandran Canadian streaming service Crave has partnered with Pier 21 Films on eight-part series “Late Bloomer,” created by and starring Jasmeet Singh Raina, also known as Jus Reign. The series is inspired by Raina’s life as a Punjabi Sikh millennial and online celebrity. The show follows burgeoning content creator Jasmeet Dutta as he tries to balance his ambitions for success with his commitment to his family, community and culture. Production is underway in Toronto and Hamilton. As Jus Reign, Raina is a global social media star and was one of Much Digital Studios’ first content creators in 2015. Raina became known for his deadpan comedic style and commentary on race and pop culture and is part of a group of storytellers who charted the way for increased South Asian representation in mainstream media.

Angelique Jackson “Cinnamon” — the inaugural project filmed under Village Roadshow Pictures’ Black Noir Cinema banner, co-founded by NBA all-star Kevin Garnett — has debuted its first trailer. Written, directed and executive produced by Bryian Keith Montgomery Jr., the Tubi original film was selected to make its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and stars Hailey Kilgore, Damon Wayans, Pam Grier, David Iacono and Jeremie Harris. The noir thriller follows a struggling small-town gas station attendant and aspiring singer, named Jodi Jackson, (Kilgore, who displays the singing chops that led to her 2018 Tony nomination for “Once on This Island” in the teaser below) whose life is sent into a tailspin after a fatal crime.

The Canadian Screen Awards airs tonight, with Samantha Bee hosting the pre-recorded special featuring highlights from the four days of award events that concluded Friday.

The freshman broadcast series will vie for consideration in the limited or anthology series categories, and Variety can exclusively reveal the creative teams’ plans for submitting its sprawling ensemble and its respective races. Fox Movie,” which is set to premiere on May 12. “Still” follows Fox, the legendary “Back to the Future” and “Teen Wolf” actor, as he recounts his life story, from his childhood in Canada to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Director Davis Guggenheim elevates Fox’s story with the inclusion of documentary, archival and scripted elements, which come together to take viewers inside Fox’s world. In interviews with Guggenheim, Fox recounts the difficult years that followed his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, a brain disorder that causes uncontrollable movements, at just 29 years old. Now 61 and having come to terms with the illness, Fox recounts in the trailer how living with Parkinson’s has made him a “tough son of a bitch.”

Naman Ramachandran Canadian drama series “Streams Flow From a River” will debut in Canada on Super Channel, available on Apple TV and Prime Video Channels, on April 1. The series is in the Canneseries short format competition and will have its international premiere at the festival on April 18. Produced by Canadian scripted production company Fae Pictures, “Streams Flow From a River” (6 x 14′) is the first Canadian series from an all-Asian writers’ room and 75% East Asian crew led by producer Shant Joshi (“Framing Agnes,” “Porcupine Lake”). Joshi is one of MipTV’s Producers to Watch 2023 and will be attending Mip-Canneseries Connections event.
