Barbie fans think they’ve spotted secret cameo from rival dolls in hit film

Barbie fans love more about the hottest movie of the year – aside from the pink, the cast, the vibes, and the pink – than spotting its hidden references and subtle Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.Fans have been poring over every pink detail of the highly-anticipated Greta Gerwig flick since the first trailer dropped, going into a hot pink frenzy with every “genius” tid bit uncovered. But since the film’s record-breaking release weekend, once Barbies and Kens had a chance to take in Barbieland’s full pastel glory, theories are swirling about the more subtle pop culture nods. One particular theory speculates that the film features a subtle cameo by Barbie’s biggest rival: the Bratz dolls.Fans have taken to social media to unpack their theory, honing in on the scene where Barbie (Margot Robbie) travels to the real world and goes to a high school while searching for the girl she believes is responsible for her existential crisis. At the school, she comes across a teenager named Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) and her three friends who give the cowgirl-dressed Barbie a brutal reality check about her problematic history in the real world.“We haven’t played with Barbie since we were, like, five years old,” Sasha tells Barbie.“You’ve been making women feel bad about themselves since you were invented.”One TikTok user, Ivan Mars, posted a video saying it took him three trips to the cinema to realize the group of teens bear an eerie resemblance to the original four Bratz dolls named Yasmin, Sasha, Cloe, and Jade. And though the three friends – played by McKenna Roberts, Sasha Milstein, and Brylee Hsu – being unnamed “Junior High Friend” characters, their apparent ringleader Sasha shares not only a name, but a nickname with one of Barbie’s

Greta Gerwig responds to ‘woke’ ‘Barbie’ accusations: ‘There’s a lot of passion’

the New York Times.“Certainly, there’s a lot of passion. My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men,” said Gerwig.“I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people,” the director said.Gerwig was responding specifically to the interviewer’s question as to whether or not the “Lady Bird” director anticipated “the degree to which rightwing pundits are bashing the movie as being ‘woke’ and burning their Barbies.”Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro flamed the feminist themes in “Barbie” by lighting Barbie dolls and a pink toy car on fire at the start of a 43-minute YouTube review.

The success of ‘Barbenheimer’ means nothing for the movies

the social media nickname given to the one-two punch of Warner Bros’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” — did boffo business at the domestic box office, grossing a combined $235 million. “Barbie,” at $155 million alone, had the biggest three-day opening of the year so far. And right on cue, the usual pronouncements are being made:Audiences love originality! (Everyone has seemingly forgotten that Barbie is a super-famous doll and not from director Greta Gerwig’s imagination.) Stories about women sell! (Just as with men’s stories, like floperoo “Indiana Jones,” sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. “Oppenheimer,” which many online are calling sexist toward women, sold tremendously well at $80 million.) It’s quality, stupid! (Tell that to “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Women Talking,” “The Fabelmans” and most of the other Best Picture Oscar nominees released last year.) However, the real takeaway of #Barbenheimer — a cinematic Brigadoon that will soon disappear into the fog — is one that is becoming increasingly obvious in the entertainment world at large: Ticket-buyers want Events. It’s not enough for consumers to regularly attend good movies or nice Broadway shows or average concerts and then head home and go to bed.

Greta Gerwig Refused to Cut a ‘Barbie’ Scene That’s the ‘Heart of the Movie,’ Told Execs: ‘If I Cut That, I Don’t Know Why I’m Making This Film’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is now playing in theaters nationwide, but one if its most emotional scenes might not have made it to the big screen had the filmmaker not held her ground against studio executives. In several interviews before the comedy’s theatrical release, Gerwig revealed that it was suggested she cut out the scene where Barbie (Margot Robbie) meets an elderly woman on a bench and tells her she’s beautiful. “I love that scene so much,” Gerwig told Rolling Stone. “And the older woman on the bench is the costume designer Ann Roth. She’s a legend. It’s a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way — it doesn’t lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, ‘Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.’ And I said, ‘If I cut the scene, I don’t know what this movie is about.'”

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Over a single weekend, 28-year-old Toronto resident Daniel Konikoff will experience two life-changing events. On July 23, he’s getting married. Two days before, he’s going to the movies with his bride-to-be and their entire wedding party for a double feature of Greta Gerwig’s very pink romp “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s extremely dark historical drama “Oppenheimer.” “It stemmed from a joke, and then we started to actually create a plan,” Konikoff says. “So, the double bill is a little wedding-adjacent party.” As soon as the second movie lets out at 1 a.m. — “it’s bed!” he adds. “And then we drive to the venue. There’s not a lot of sleep, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”
