’12 Years a Slave’ Director Steve McQueen Dedicates Cannes-Selected Films to George Floyd

As George Floyd protests continue to rage in the US, celebrities are taking a stand to speak up and contribute in their own little way. Selena Gomez is one such star.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, spoke out about the death of George Floyd in a speech to high school students on Wednesday.

Meghan Markle talked, in a video address to graduating high-school students, about the death of George Floyd and said young people can help "rebuild" society. "When the foundation is broken, so are we," Markle said about the "absolutely devasting" recent events in the U.S.

Mourners filed into a sanctuary in Minneapolis on Thursday for the first in a series of memorials to George Floyd, whose death at the hands of police has sparked sporadic violence and turbulent protests around the world against racial injustice.

Meghan Markle is speaking out for the first time since protests have swept the nation and the world in the wake of George Floyd's death on May 25. People across the country have publicly protested police brutality after Floyd died at the age of 46 when a police officer pressed his knee into his neck for more than eight minutes. 

Taking a stand. Meghan Markle honored George Floyd and Black Lives Matter in a video for her former Los Angeles high school. The former Duchess of Sussex surprised students at her alma mater, Immaculate Heart High School, on Wednesday, June 3, with a video message for graduates in the wake of Floyd’s death and marches across the world in protest of police brutality and systemic racial violence.

As protests continue around the world following the death of George Floyd, some officials are going viral for their peaceful gestures.  Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson recently made headlines after he took off his weapons and marched with a group of protesters in Flint, Michigan. During an interview on E!'s digital series Just the Sip, the longtime sheriff explained what led to the decision.  "Today's my 27-year anniversary on the job.

George Floyd‘s son Quincy Mason delivered a heart-wrenching message when he spoke to a crowd at the site of his father’s death. The 27-year-old knelt in prayer during a visit to the site on June 3, just one week after his dad died in the racially charged police killing which has sparked global outcry and protests. “No man or woman should be without their father,” he said, “And we want justice for what’s going on right now.”

Steve McQueen is dedicating his newest films to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Cannes may not be taking place this year, but the festival did announce their lineup of official selections on Wednesday. It includes two films from director Steve McQueen, who says he is dedicating them to the memory of George Floyd.
