On the heels of its 30th anniversary, “A League of Their Own” from director Penny Marshall has been reimagined for television in the streaming age by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart In The Jungle”). Taking inspiration from the 1992 screenplay by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who in turn based their screenplay on a story by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson, the new Amazon Prime Video show seeks to make explicit aspects of history that were merely implied in the original film.

debuted in theaters, the movie has been adapted by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham into an expanded, original TV series for Prime Video with Jacobson also starring as catcher Carson Shaw. The historical period drama will not only tell the story about the formation of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), but also chronicle the authentic and diverse lives of its many players — with season 1 largely focused on the women that made up the Rockford Peaches. It’s a series that will be familiar to many, while exploring new territory not previously seen on screen in this way before.

Inspired by the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which operated from 1943 to 1954, Penny Marshall’s 1992 film “A League of Their Own” is a ’90s comedy classic starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna. Abbi Jacobson revealed that the reboot of A League of Their Own got the late Penny Marshall‘s blessing.

There’s no crying in baseball, as the original movie classically said, but all the hardships that women endure, now and then, sexism, misogyny, racism, and bias you can think of are on display in the new trailer for Prime Video’s “A League Of Their Own.” Yes, it’s a reboot, a reimagining of the original in series form—Hollywood would never let a good intellectual property lay dormant these days. But it’s not as cynical as you might think and comes with a good pedigree, co-created and executive produced by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (co-creator and star of the beloved “Broad City”).

The series hails from Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television, in association with Field Trip Productions.It will span eight episodes, all of them dropping on Friday, August 12 on the streaming service.It’s described as evoking “the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the league and outside of it.”Will Graham and Jacobson are co-creators and executive producers. Field Trip’s Hailey Wierengo andDesta Tedros Reff are also EPs.
