Making its European premiere, Sally El Hosaini’s The Swimmers has been set as the opening film of the 18th Zurich Film Festival. Based on the inspirational true-life story of the Mardini sisters, it will screen on September 22 at Zurich’s Convention Center. It will earlier world premiere as the opening night gala presentation in Toronto.

Naman Ramachandran Variety can exclusively reveal the first look of top Pakistani star Sajal Aly from keenly anticipated rom-com “What’s Love Got to Do with It?,” which will have its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.Directed by veteran Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”), “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” follows documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), for whom swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan.

Sally El Hosaini’s “The Swimmers” has been chosen as the Opening Night Gala Presentation for the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.Based on the true story of Yusra and Sarah Mardini, “The Swimmers” chronicles the journey of two sisters who flee Syria in the midst of war and eventually make it to the 2016 Rio Olympics. In August 2015, the Mardini sisters were on the third leg of their journey, a boat trip from Turkey to Greece, when the overcrowded vessel began to sink.

They made their way to Lebanon and then Turkey, where they arranged to be smuggled into Greece by dinghy.

Yossman The BBC has set a release date for “Everything I Know About Love,” the adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s book of the same name.The full season will debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on June 7.The seven episode season, which was written and created by Alderton, was directed by China Moo-Young (“Pennyworth”).

“Ticket to Paradise,” a romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, has suspended production in the Queensland state of Australia due to rising COVID cases in the region.An individual with knowledge confirmed production on “Ticket to Paradise” was temporarily suspended, but could not comment on specifics in terms of a time frame. A source also says that a limited number of COVID cases were reported on the film, but that production was suspended due to the rising number of cases in the Queensland area.

EXCLUSIVE: Oscar winning filmmaker Steve McQueen has set his next feature. He will write, direct and produce Blitz based on his original idea. McQueen has set the film at New Regency and McQueen’s Lammas Park will produce alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films.
