Thania Garcia BMG has laid off an estimated 40 employees amid changes impacting its international and theatrical departments. Music Business Worldwide reports CEO Thomas Coesfeld shared the news in a company-distributed memo addressing BMG consolidating its New York and Canada-based recorded music operations into its Los Angeles office. The New York-based theatrical productions will also cease along with any of its future ventures in film.

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music BMG has acquired a “substantial stake” in the work of legendary songwriter and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Paul Simon, the company announced Thursday. The acquisition includes his royalty income in Simon & Garfunkel recordings as well as his neighboring rights income; Simon sold his publishing catalog to Sony Music Publishing in 2021. According the the announcement, the deal includes such songs as ‘The Sound Of Silence’, ‘The Boxer’, ‘Mrs Robinson’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Paul Simon was represented in the transaction by Gene Salomon and Don Passman at Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman. 

APPOINTMENTSBMG has announced that CFO Thomas Coesfeld will move into the CEO role at the company from 1 Jul, six months earlier that originally planned. Current CEO Hartwig Masuch announced in January that he is stepping down, though the original plan was for Coesfeld to take over at the start of 2024. Mathis Wolter will become the firm’s new CFO, moving over from sister company RTL Group.

APPOINTMENTSBMG last week announced that Thomas Coesfeld will join the company as Deputy Chief Financial Officer next month, and then become the music firm’s actual CFO next April. He is currently Chief Strategy Officer at Mohn Media, part of BMG sister company Bertelsmann Printing Group.
