Zack Snyder‘s space adventure film “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” has set a one-week theatrical run ahead of its debut on Netflix. The film will be playing exclusively on 70mm from Dec. 15-21 at the following locations: Los Angeles (Egyptian Theatre), New York City (Paris Theater), Toronto (TIFF Bell Lightbox) and London (Prince Charles Cinema).

Originally pitched as a new “Star Wars” tale in the days when Disney was taking new Lucasfilm pitches, Zack Snyder took a no or a maybe, and made it his own with his upcoming film, “Rebel Moon.” From those nascent beginnings, seeing if Kathleen Kennedy was interested, Snyder crafted a big space opera of his own and took it to his new home at Netflix where he’s already set up shop with his zombie franchise, “Army Of The Dead.” Snyder’s ethos seems to be go big or go home so for “Rebel Moon” he did just that, taking one big movie and splitting it into two, “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire,” which comes out this year in December and “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver” which is now set to arrive in April 2024.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Zack Snyder’s space opera “Rebel Moon” is coming to Netflix at the end of the year, but it would’ve been a “Star Wars” movie had the “Justice League” director’s original plan for the project panned out. The idea for “Rebel Moon” started out as a pitch for a Snyder-directed “Star Wars” movie that Lucasfilm heard after Disney acquired the studio in 2012 for $4.05 billion. Snyder was in post-production on “Man of Steel” when he made his “Star Wars” pitch to Lucasfilm. Snyder said in a new interview with Empire magazine that “a ‘Star Wars’ movie” was “my original concept” for “Rebel Moon,” adding, “It was ‘Seven Samurai’ in space. I knew that the origins for George [Lucas] were a lot of those Kurosawa films.”

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Zack Snyder revealed at the start of 2023 that his Netflix space epic “Rebel Moon” would be split into two movies. But Snyder is actually making four movies, sort of. In a Vanity Fair first look at “Rebel Moon,” Snyder announced that each “Rebel Moon” movie is getting two separate cuts. One cut is a movie that “anyone can enjoy and watch,” and one cut will be more explicit and strictly for adults. “I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them,” Snyder said of the harder cuts. “Rebel Moon” was written as one movie, but Netflix became hesitant after Snyder delivered a 172-page draft. At that length, “Rebel Moon” would’ve clocked around three hours.

Every episode of Steven Knight’s new series “Rogue Heroes” begins with a declarative statement: “Based on a true story, the events depicted which seem most unbelievable … are mostly true.” It’s the sort of pithy postmodern title card that might elicit an eye-roll. Yet it also perfectly encapsulates this rollicking tale of the Special Air Service (SAS) formation during World War II.  While occasionally deploying anachronistic ‘80s rock songs to lighten the mood and using title cards that can probably be best described as graffiti-chic, “Rogue Heroes” is both utterly unbelievable and, well, mainly true to the facts.
