Naman Ramachandran Sky original drama series “The Lovers,” starring Johnny Flynn (“Beast”) and Roisin Gallagher (“The Fall”) has commenced production. The six-part series, written by playwright David Ireland (“Cyprus Avenue”) and directed by Justin Martin (“Together”), follows Janet (Gallagher), a foul-mouthed, disaffected Belfast supermarket worker and Seamus (Flynn) a self-centred, political broadcaster with what looks to be a perfect London life and a celebrity girlfriend.

Sky has put a darkly comic drama about a foul-mouthed supermarket worker in Belfast into production. Roisin Gallagher (The Fall, The Dry) and Johnny Flynn (Beast, Emma) take the leading roles in The Lovers, which is from Doctor Foster and Pure producer Drama Republic.

Peaky Blinders and Cobra producer Joe Donaldson has set an indie, Magic Hour Television, and signed a first-look deal with All3Media International and All3Media-owned drama house New Pictures. Donaldson will develop a slate, funded by All3 and its international arm, and partner with New Pictures co-founder and CEO Willow Grylls to produce scripted TV.

Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has addressed his “competitive” nature as he prepares for House Of The Dragon to vie with The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power.The writer, who has also served as a producer/consultant on HBO‘s Game Of Thrones and its forthcoming prequel series House Of The Dragon, said in a new interview that he hopes that if The Rings Of Power “win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven”.Martin told The Independent that he wishes both shows will succeed because he supports more epic fantasy being shown on screen.He said: “I know a lot of articles, the minute the dates were announced, it’s, ‘Oh, the battle for fantasy supremacy. It’s Rings Of Power versus House Of Dragon, who will win?’ I don’t know why they always have to do that.“I hope both shows succeed.

This England, starring Kenneth Branagh as Boris Johnson.The series, co-written and directed by Michael Winterbottom, is based on Johnson’s first months as prime minister and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK.A synopsis reads: “The drama takes us inside the halls of power, as Johnson grapples with COVID-19, Brexit, and a personal and political life wracked by controversy.“The events in government are interwoven with first-hand testimonies from around the UK, from the experts and scientists racing against time to understand the virus; the doctors, nurses and care-home workers on the frontline working tirelessly and heroically to contain and overcome it; and ordinary people whose lives were thrown into turmoil.”Alongside Branagh, the show stars Ophelia Lovibond (Feel Good) as Carrie Johnson and Andrew Buchan (The Crown) as former Health Secretary Matt Hancock.While an exact release date is yet to be announced, This England is scheduled to be released on Sky Atlantic and NOW later this year.Branagh was recently cast in Christopher Nolan’s next film Oppenheimer, alongside Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh and Rami Malek.The film follows theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy) and his contributions to the Manhattan Project which led to the creation of the atomic bomb.

Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino has signed with CAA.  He recently wrapped production on Challengers starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, which MGM recently acquired. Prior to that he had directed Bones and All, starring Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell.

HBO‘s new LA Lakers drama.The actor is set to portray former Lakers owner Jerry Buss in the forthcoming basketball drama Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty, which is due out next month.Reilly was the third choice for the role in the Adam McKay drama after Will Ferrell and Michael Shannon dropped out.“I’d been sitting at my kitchen table, thinking, ‘Man, I’m dead in the water, all this work, 80 movies, and I got nothing going on,’ when I got the text from Adam,” Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter.He landed the part after Ferrell fell out with his longstanding collaborator McKay over the role.“It ended not well,” McKay said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair after Ferrell, a die hard fan of the team, had his heart set on playing Buss.McKay thought that Ferrell’s Step Brothers co-star Reilly would be better suited for the role.“Ferrell just doesn’t look like Jerry Buss, and he’s not that vibe of a Jerry Buss,” added McKay. “And there were some people involved who were like, ‘We love Ferrell, he’s a genius, but we can’t see him doing it.’ It was a bit of a hard discussion.” To make things worse, McKay didn’t personally notify Ferrell of the choice.
