Mónica Marie Zorrilla “CODA” and “Little America” director Siân Heder will expand her partnership with Apple, inking a multi-year overall deal to write and develop series exclusively for the tech giant’s streaming platform.

EXCLUSIVE: Picture Perfect Federation, which recently tapped CODA filmmaker Siân Heder to write and direct a feature adaptation of Sarah Lotz’s novel Impossible, is getting into the scripted podcast business.

Filmmaker Siân Heder, whose Sundance hit CODA was recently sold to Apple for a festival record of $25M, is set to direct and write a feature take of Sarah Lotz’s upcoming 2022 novel Impossible.

“CODA” director Sian Heder is reuniting with the film’s producer Patrick Wachsberger and his Picture Perfect Federation to develop a feature film titled “Impossible.”Heder will write and directed the project, based on a novel of the same name written by Sarah Lotz. Ashley Stern is also producing via Picture Perfect Federation, alongside Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill for Black Label Media, as well as Sherry Marsh for Marsh Entertainment.

CODA has won the top award at the Sundance Film Festival, taking this year's U.S. Grand Jury prize.

For the first time in recent memory, the Sundance Film Festival recruited just three members each for its competition juries. Even in the context of a virtual festival, that might have been a mistake after one film dominated the Dramatic category winning four awards.

EXCLUSIVE: In the first big deal of the 2021 virtual Sundance Film Festival, Apple has landed worldwide rights to CODA, for a number just north of $25 million. That sets a new a Sundance acquisitions record — above the $22.5 million that Palm Springs received last year from Hulu/Neon. But this time, all the premiere watching and all night auctioning was done far from the slopes of Park City. It came down to a pitched battle between Apple and Amazon.

CODA was the right film to start this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. Writer-director Siân Heder’s coming-of-age drama about a girl who is the only hearing person in her deaf family premiered last night in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. The pic was well received among buyers, and we hear there have been multiple offers already.

Writer-director Siân Heder, whose unconventional family drama “Tallulah” premiered at the 2016 edition of Sundance, is excited to be back at the festival, even if the conditions are somewhat different this year with the event taking place virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. “Sundance sent us a package yesterday,” Heder says over a Zoom conversation before the opening night premiere of her film “CODA.” “[It] had a down coat, my festival badge, and a hat for Sundance.

In this virtual era, it goes without saying that much of the communal aspect of a film festival has evaporated. Strangers don’t compare notes waiting inline or with their neighbor before a film begins.

Apple TV Plus’s anthology drama “Little America” may not be about politics, but by telling tales of immigrants in a polarizing time, many people feel there is a political undercurrent to its themes.
