With no end in sight to Hollywood's widespread work stoppage due to the novel coronavirus, Netflix has upped its relief fund for the now-unemployed production community. The fund's amount has been increased by 50 percent to $150 million, a company spokesperson confirmed Friday morning.

Citing the coronavirus pandemic, Penguin Press has decided to delay publication of a new business bible co-written by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. The book, No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention, co-authored by Erin Meyer, was scheduled for a May 12 release.

Netflix has agreed to temporarily reduce video quality of its streaming service in Europe, reducing bit rates for the next 30 days at the behest of the European Union in order to ease the load on internet networks in the region.
The coronavirus has yet another unforeseen impact. The European Union recently urged Netflix and other streaming platforms to only allow video streaming in standard definition — rather than high definition — to relieve some of the bandwidth strain during times of unprecedented usage as people are increasingly quarantined due to the spread of COVID-19.
A top European Union official called on Netflix and other streaming-video services to reduce video quality to standard-definition format — forgoing HD for now — so that internet networks don’t get overloaded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A book co-authored by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings will be released May 12.
Netflix continues to say it has no strategic interest at all in launching a version of its streaming service that includes ads — and would rather avoid the privacy pitfalls of collecting consumer data.
Netflix plans to keep revving up its movie slate in the coming year, although the volume of new releases will grow at a steadier pace following the ramp-up of the past 18 months, Netflix executives told investors Tuesday in discussing the company’s Q4 2019 earnings.
