Three films opening this weekend highlight women’s rights, class and racism — nothing ripped from today’s headlines exactly, but features with a distinctive moment and point of view that appear particularly relevant today. Call Jane, Holy Spider and Armageddon Time join Tár, Till, The Banshees of Inisherin and others already in theaters as it gets crowded out there in specialty.

Among the upcoming Roadside films that will stream exclusively on Hulu are “Call Jane,” the feature directorial debut of Emmy and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy. Starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver, the timely film tells the story of the Janes, a group of underground abortion activists who provided abortions in secret to women prior to the recently overturned Supreme Court ruling in Roe v.

“There’s nothing wishy-washing about working with Phyllis Nagy,” Elizabeth Banks tells Deadline of working with the Call Jane director. “She’s very gentle with her direction but she’s also firm with what she expects or wants out of something, which I really appreciate.”

Apple Original Films has landed the rights to “The Beanie Bubble,” a movie about the ’90s craze surrounding the lovable plush Beanie Babies toys that will star Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan. “The Beanie Bubble” is co-directed by Kristin Gore, an Emmy nominee known for “SNL” and “Futurama” and Damian Kulash, best known as the front man of the rock band OK Go.
