Jack Dunn The National Association of Broadcasters and Curtis LeGeyt have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him as CEO of the organization through 2029, NAB joint board chair Perry Sook announced Tuesday. LeGeyt has been with NAB for more than a decade.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Nexstar reported its fourth-quarter 2023 earnings Wednesday, revealing its TV ad sales were down 36% from Oct. 1- Dec. 31.

The CW systematically stripped away its superhero dramas and teen-centric soaps during the 2022-23 television season, taking the foundation of its primetime programming slate down to the studs. Now comes the reveal of a renovation that leans heavily on niche sports, noisy unscripted series, procedural dramas and broad-skewing comedies. The change comes a year after Texas-based Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in The CW from its founders, CBS and Warner Bros.

UPDATED with additional strike comments. The CW had to delay four scripted shows produced by minority stakeholders Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount due to the writers and actors strikes, but it does not expect any further impact from the labor impasse.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Nexstar reported its second-quarter 2023 earnings Tuesday, revealing the TV stations group giant had turned a profit of $153 million in Q2, while its CW broadcast network posted a loss of $78 million for the April-June quarter. For the CW, which was formally acquired by Nexstar in October 2022 from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, a year-over-year comparison can’t be drawn based on the lack of financial results disclosed publicly by its former parent companies.

Dennis Miller, who took the helm of The CW after Nexstar Media Group bought majority control of it last fall, has been re-upped as president of the broadcast network through 2027.

Mike Biard, a 23-year veteran of Fox Corp., has been appointed president and chief operating officer of Nexstar, the No. 1 owner of local TV stations in the U.S. and the parent of The CW and NewsNation.

Perry Sook, CEO of The CW parent Nexstar, said the network’s deal this year to broadcast the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit has led to talks with “everyone” in the vibrant sports rights marketplace.

Perry Sook, who has led Nexstar Media Group from humble beginnings two-plus decades ago to its current status as the top owner of TV stations and the parent of The CW, made $39.3 million in 2022.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Nexstar reported its fourth-quarter 2022 earnings Tuesday, revealing its core ad sales fell 3.3% from Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the quarter it finalized its purchase of the CW Network, but political ad revenue was up 1,306.9% due to the 2022 midterm elections. The TV station groups giant reported core advertising revenue at $477.5 million for the quarter, down from $493.7 million in the comparable 2021 period. Meanwhile, political ad sales were at a whopping $265.9 million versus $18.9 million last year. Overall, Nexstar’s total TV ad sales were up 45%, coming in at $743.4 million compared to $512.6 in Q4 2021.

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor After spending several years setting the pace of “The Flash” and other hard-racing TV superheroes on the CW network, Mark Pedowitz has reached the end of his current adventure. The longtime TV executive, who has run the one-time joint venture between CBS and Time Warner since 2011, is leaving the network as Nexstar Media Group prepares to acquire the outlet, which has its roots in two antecedent networks, UPN and The WB, that both catered to younger viewers. Nexstar is expected to close the deal at some point in the third quarter of 2022, but has already begun to run the network’s operations. Dennis Miller, a longtime TV executive who eventually moved into the world of venture capital, will take the reins as president of CW. Miller has served on Nexstar’s board of directors for the past few years.

Mark Pedowitz, who has served as chairman and CEO of The CW for the past 11 years, will be exiting the network as Nexstar completes its acquisition of a 75% controlling stake, the company announced Monday. Dennis Miller, who has held senior executive positions at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate Television and Turner Network Television, will take over as The CW’s new president, effective immediately.

Nexstar, the largest TV station group, got a boost from midterm political ad spending as well as a rise in distribution and digital revenue in the second quarter.

Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said a show called The Hill will debut on NewsNation by year end, building on the 2021 acquisition of the Beltway-focused digital asset as it builds up content on the news network he said is showing “green shoots.”

Nexstar Media Group, the No. 1 owner of local TV stations in the U.S., weathered the absence of political advertising in the fourth quarter to post better-than-expected results.
