The news last weekthat Participant Media would be shutting down shocked the entertainment industry, but it hit the documentary community with particular force.

There were plenty of mixed emotions this week in response to the closure of Oscar-winning production company Participant, and at the very least the industry has agreed something has come to an end.

After honoring “Reservation Dogs,” “Dopesick,” “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” and Dan Rather yesterday, the Peabody Awards continued their four-day rollout revealing seven additional winners. To no one’s surprise, HBO Max’s “Hacks” and the PBS docu-series “Philly D.A.” were among the winners.

Julie Cohen and Betsy West knew they had to make their movie “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” about former U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when, in their first video call with her, they saw that she and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, had kept a piece of her skull in a tupperware in their freezer.

PBS was the top winner in the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards on Tuesday, with four honors for outstanding broadcast and digital reporting in the public interest.

Lawyer, scholar, priest and queer pioneer Pauli Murray is exactly the kind of historical personage for whom the phrase “I can’t believe I’ve never heard of them before!” exists. No less than Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were indebted to Murray for their legal triumphs in overturning segregation and discrimination against women.

Directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West first came across the name Pauli Murray while working on their Oscar-nominated documentary “RBG.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg had written “Pauli Murray” on the front cover of her first women’s rights brief before the Supreme Court to give credit for the idea she'd be arguing. Murray had, in 1965, written a law journal article positing that the 14th Amendment could be used to protect gender equality.
