Katherine Tulich 20th Century Studios’ fantasy action film “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” has begun production in Sydney, New South Wales, at the iconic Fox Studios Australia, which have been newly renamed Disney Studios Australia. The franchise film is pitched as a new chapter in the “Planet of the Apes” saga, picking up many years after the conclusion of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Under the direction of Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner” trilogy) it will star Owen Teague (“It”), Freya Allan (“The Witcher”), Peter Macon (“The Orville”), Eka Darville (“Jessica Jones”) and Kevin Durand (“The Strain”).

2017’s “War For The Planet Of The Apes” marked the end of Matt Reeves’ “Planet Of The Apes” reboot trilogy (started by filmmaker director Rupert Wyatt). Great news, “Predator” fans: a new pic in the franchise is on the way. And no, it’s not “Prey 2,” although that’s still very much in development.

That tentpole blood bath that was to occur over Memorial Day weekend between 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Furiosa is no longer: The former Apes reboot is now shifting two weeks earlier to May 10.

20th Century Studios announced today that its Predator spinoff Prey has notched the #1 premiere on Hulu to date, across all of the streamer’s films and television series. The film also registered as the most-watched premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release. Specific stats as to its viewership have not been disclosed.

I do not envy anyone writing a horror franchise, much less those writing on one that only has one good installment like “Predator.” John McTiernan‘s 1987 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is god-tier classic. Still, unlike James Cameron’s “Aliens,” this franchise was never able to find a second installment that breathed new life into it.
