Friends of the Necropolis website, in 1831, John Strang, Chamberlain at the Merchants’ House wrote that the park appeared "admirably adapted" to create Glasgow's own version of the famous Paris Pere Lachaise cemetery. He added that this new Necropolis (city of the dead) would provide "much wanted" and "respectful" accommodation to the higher classes and provide a lucrative source of profit for the charitable Merchant's House.
