Paramount+ has rounded out the cast for its upcoming YA drama series School Spirits as production gets underway in Vancouver. Kristian Flores (Reboot), Spencer MacPherson (Reign), Kiara Pichardo (The Society), Sarah Yarkin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Nick Pugliese (Dramarama) and Rainbow Wedell (The Wilds) join previously announced Peyton List in the series based on the upcoming graphic novel by Nate & Megan Trinrud and Maria Nguyen. The streamer also confirmed the casting of Milo Manheim, which we previously reported, as a lead opposite List.

The series stars Peyton List as Maddie Nears, a teen girl stuck in the afterlife investigating her own mysterious disappearance. Maddie goes on a crime-solving journey as she adjusts to high school purgatory, but the closer she gets to discovering the truth, the more secrets and lies she uncovers. The cast also includes Kristian Ventura as Simon Elroy, Milo Manheim as Wally Clark, Spencer MacPherson as Xavier Baxter, Kiara Pichardo as Nicole Herrera, Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda, Nick Pugliese as Charley and Rainbow Wedell as Claire Zomer.

It’s lovely to see former “Happy Days” star and Emmy-winner Henry Winkler in a full-blown renaissance period, just thriving as an outstanding comedic character actor on shows like “Arrested Development” and Bill Hader‘s hit HBO hitman comedy “Barry.” Winkler won the Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series at the 70th Emmy Awards for his work on “Barry,” and it’s clear that HBO wants to keep staying in the Winkler business as they’re looking to reunite for a new true-crime series at the prestigious television studio.

Joey Morgan, the actor who made his debut in 2015’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and garnered additional attention for his performance in the Max Winkler’s 2017 Tribeca Film Festival premiere Flower, died yesterday at the age of 28. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

When a small indie film uses the title “Jungleland,” it's natural to expect that Bruce Springsteen's famous tune will be heard. But, as with much of Max Winkler's moody, tender movie, the answer is yes and no.

The subgenre of dramas focused on down-on-his-luck fighters trying to make a name for themselves and escape their humble lives is one of the most popular in all of film. Of course, you have classics like “Rocky,” which show that the underdog can win, but then on the other side of the spectrum, you have “Jungleland,” which shows that sometimes the underdog is destined to fail…over and over again.

While superheroes seem to dominate the box office, there’s no denying that films about humans and their pet dogs are a subgenre that has stood the test of time and proven to be big hits with film fans, if done right.
