Is the Western a dead genre? Not if Chilean director Felipe Gálvez has anything to do with it. Gálvez’s “The Settlers,” wowed audiences at the Cannes Film Festival this past May and won the Un Certain Regard FIPRESCI Prize in the process.

Yossman “Bohemian Rhapsody” star Lucy Boynton smoulders as 1950s nightclub owner Ruth Ellis in a new image from upcoming ITV drama “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.” Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955 after she was convicted of shooting dead her lover, racing driver David Blakely. Boynton is joined by Toby Jones (“Tetris”), Laurie Davidson (“Cats”) and Mark Stanley (“Trigger Point”) in the four-part series, which promises to expose the British obsession with class, sex and death.

MUBI has acquired the film for North America, U.K., Latin America, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux and India. MUBI will release the film theatrically in the U.S., U.K., and additional territories with release plans to be revealed soon. “The Settlers” is set in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century. A wealthy landowner hires three horsemen to mark out the perimeter of his extensive property and open a route to the Atlantic Ocean across vast Patagonia. The expedition, composed of a young Chilean mestizo, an American mercenary, and led by a reckless British lieutenant, soon turns into a ‘civilizing’ raid.

Marta Balaga Debuting Chilean director Felipe Gálvez doesn’t shy away from controversy. On the contrary: he actually welcomes it. “I love to be controversial,” he tells Variety in Cannes, where he is introducing blood-soaked Western “The Settlers,” posing some uncomfortable questions about his country’s colonial past.   “If something is controversial, it’s a good sign. It means it’s interesting. I am trying to provoke with my film, because this conversation is far from over.” Set in 1901, “The Settlers” sees three men (Benjamin Westfall, Mark Stanley and Camilo Arancibia) hired by a rich Spanish landowner (Alfredo Castro) to mark out his immense property. One is American, one Scottish, one of Indigenous descent. But what is really expected of them is to get rid of the Indigenous tribes.

An English lieutenant, an American cowboy, and a mixed-race Chilean sheepherder venture into the inhospitable limits of the Tierra de Fuego region at the southernmost tip of the South American continent—the ends of the Earth, some might call it. Filming on a second series of Trigger Point is underway and is expected to air on our television screens later this year. The police drama, starring Vicky McClure in the lead role as a police bomb disposal officer, was a huge hit amongst viewers in 2022.

Yossman First look images have been revealed of the third and purportedly final season of crime drama “Happy Valley.” The six-part final season, made by Lookout Point for BBC One and BBC iPlayer in co-production with AMC Networks, will see Sarah Lancashire return as Sergeant Catherine Cawood and James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce. The first images show Lancashire sporting a bloody nose following a police raid while Royce, with a new look, is locked in his prison cell. Siobhan Finneran stars as Catherine’s sister Clare and Rhys Connah as her teenage grandson Ryan.
