Mark Hamill Says ‘Star Wars’ Doesn’t Need Luke Skywalker Anymore: ‘I Just Don’t See Any Reason’ to Play Him Again

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Mark Hamill’s days as Luke Skywalker are basically over. During an interview on CBS News’ “Sunday Morning,” the “Star Wars” icon said the franchise no longer needs the hero who helped make it a worldwide phenomenon. “Well, you never say never, but I just don’t see any reason to,” Hamill said about reprising the role of Luke Skywalker. “Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore. I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough.” Hamill was the face of George Lucas’ original “Star Wars” trilogy alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. He returned to the role decades later at the very end of 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and he was a key character in 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” That film ended with Luke’s death, but Hamill returned as a Force ghost in 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker” and then played a younger Luke via motion capture and de-aging visual effects in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.”

Mark Hamill Says Backlash Over Michael Keaton’s Batman Casting Inspired Him to Audition for Joker: ‘There Was a Great Controversy’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director While Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix and Jack Nicholson are the faces that pop into one’s head when the name “Joker” is said, no list of the best on-screen Jokers is complete without Mark Hamill. The “Star Wars” icon voiced the Batman villain on “Batman: The Animated Series,” which originally aired for 85 episodes on Fox Kids from 1992-1995. Hamill earned acclaim for the voice role, but it would have never happened without Michael Keaton’s casting as Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 comic book film. As Hamill recalled during a recent Wired video interview, Keaton’s casting as Bruce Wayne/Batman earned backlash from comic book fans, considering he was more known as a comedic actor in films such as “Mr. Mom” and Burton’s own “Beetlejuice.”

Don’t Ask Harrison Ford if Han Solo or Indiana Jones Would Win in a Fight: ‘What Are You Asking Me That Crap For?’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Harrison Ford revealed in a new interview with Esquire magazine that the most common question “Star Wars” fans ask him is who would win a fight: Han Solo or Indiana Jones? It’s a question that has provided fodder for many Reddit discussions and social media debates, but it’s not one Ford ever wants to entertain. As Ford said about his fans: “Well, they usually ask me, ‘If there was a fight between Han Solo and Indiana Jones, who would fuckin’ win?’ And I say [voice rising, fingers drumming], ‘Me, asshole! I don’t want to fucking make shit up like that. I mean, what are you asking me that crap for?’” Ford has played Indiana Jones in five movies, including the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” while his filmography with Han Solo also consists of five movies, including an uncredited cameo appearance in 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” That film marked the end of his Han Solo run, while “Dial of Destiny” will mark the same for Indiana Jones. Despite these iconic characters, Ford often stresses to fans that he is Harrison Ford and not Han Solo or Indiana Jones.

From ‘Star Wars’ to Marvel, Ming Na Wen Is Living Out Her ‘Big Nerd Dreams’

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards and Features Editor Since she was a child, Ming-Na Wen has been a “Star Wars” fan. “To this day, whenever I get on a plane,” she says, “I still pray to God, Buddha and The Force.” And while might be cliché to open a profile of Wen by saying The Force is strong with her — when Lucasfilm’s own Dave Filoni invokes the phrase, it would be wrong not to do so.  Long before Wen was playing bounty hunter Fennec Shand on “The Mandalorian” or its spinoff “The Book of Boba Fett,” she and Filoni attended the same high school in a Pittsburgh suburb. And he says both have always loved “Star Wars.” Says Filoni, “Working with Ming-Na Wen has been full of surprises. The Force is definitely strong with her. Always has been.”

‘A Disturbance in the Force’ Review: An Amusing Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Notorious ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’

Joe Leydon Film Critic There are times when you look back at pop culture phenomena and can’t resist the urge to ask: Can you believe this actually happened? Tackling a notorious fiasco in one of the galaxy’s most popular franchises, Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak’s amusing and exhaustive documentary ”A Disturbance in the Force” unpacks 1978’s “Star Wars Holiday Special.” You don’t have to be an obsessive “Star Wars” fan to enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at how the special — which premiered Nov. 17, 1978 on CBS, and has never been re-run on any broadcast or cable outlet — came to exist. To be sure, the fans will appreciate it a lot more than casual viewers. But it’s also an irresistible hoot for anyone with fond memories of star-studded 1970s musical/variety TV specials — a specific type of highly popular general audience entertainment that, truth to tell, very often showcased more campy excess than anything in the “Star Wars Holiday Special.”

‘The Mandalorian’ director teases “surprises” to match Luke Skywalker’s return

The Mandalorian has teased more “surprises” in the third season. The Star Wars spin-off debuted the first episode of season three on Wednesday (March 1), which picks up after Grogu and Din Djarin, aka The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal), reunited in fellow spin-off The Book Of Boba Fett.It also comes after the show’s season two finale, where Mark Hamill made a surprise appearance as Luke Skywalker in digitally de-aged form.Speaking to the Radio Times, Rick Famuyiwa, who directed the season three premiere, was asked whether anything in the third season will match Luke’s return.“There’s always something to look forward to, there’s always surprises,” Famuyiwa replied.“I think the show, at its heart, is still just about this relationship between Mando and Grogu, and that’s still the focus and still going to be the centre of it, but in that journey and in that exploration and in what Mando does, we’re obviously going to expand.”He added: “As you start to see things and his world starts to expand, we’ve had some interesting surprises and guests that have come along the way up to this point and so there’s always going to be new places to go and surprises ahead.”Along with Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Katee Sackhoff, Emily Swallow, and Amy Sedaris reprise their roles in the third season.

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Probably Won’t Make Any Sense Unless You’ve Watched ‘The Book of Boba Fett’

Adam B. Vary Senior Entertainment Writer In the Season 2 finale of “The Mandalorian” — which first streamed on Disney+ on Dec. 18, 2020, over two years ago — Mando (Pedro Pascal) bid a moving farewell to Grogu, handing over his adorably wee ward to Grogu’s new Jedi master, Luke Skywalker (played by a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill). The wrenching final scene culminated in Mando removing his helmet — violating the core precept of Mandalorian doctrine — so Grogu could see his face for the first time. It felt like the definitive end of a two-season journey, one painstakingly crafted by executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to reset the show and send it into a new storytelling galaxy. As the trailers for Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” have already made clear, however, the new season will begin on March 1 with Mando and Grogu back together. It’s almost as if the events of the Season 2 finale hadn’t happened.
