Kate Aurthur editor Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus is doing a three-part Netflix docuseries about the serial killings of Gilgo Beach on Long Island, for which Rex Heuermann of Massapequa Park was arrested in July. Between 10 and 16 women were killed on Long Island in the ’90s and 2000s, with many of their remains being found on Gilgo Beach, but it was thought to be a cold case until Heuermann was arrested and charged with three of the murders. He has pleaded not guilty.

That’s good news for documentary production companies like Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus’ Story Syndicate.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received their first award nomination for their explosive six-part docuseries that premiered on Netflix last December. On Tuesday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's "Harry & Meghan" earned a nod from the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) in the category of best streaming non-fiction series, alongside fellow nominees "Rennervations," "Prehistoric Planet 2," "Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss," "The Reluctant Traveller with Eugene Levy" and "The 1619 Project."  However, Emmy Award voters snubbed the royal couple's docuseries, which was not among the nominees announced on Wednesday.  Directed by two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus, "Harry and Meghan" broke documentary ratings records for Netflix when the series' first three episodes were released on Dec.

Newly added programming includes “The Art of Investigative Storytelling” panel, which will take a look at the creative minds behind breakout investigative and true crime storytelling. The panel will feature Tracy Pattin, co-producer and host, “Hollywood and Crime”; Shannon Evangelista, executive producer, “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace”; Sarah Amos, VP, development and production (non-fiction TV, documentaries), Condé Nast Entertainment and executive producer, “The Secrets of Hillsong”; and Mike Gasparro, executive producer, “Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” and “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.”

Charna Flam Netflix’s six-part docu-series “Harry & Meghan” puts the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the center of their story.  The limited series details the couple’s relationship, from their first impressions of one another to the growth of their family. However, throughout thesix hours, composer Gil Talmi revealed to Variety, he composed over four hours (approximately 260 minutes) of music to embrace the regal and historical elements of the Duke’s past and current challenges. “Naturally, the subject of the royalty and the monarchy lends itself to the classical background, with a lot of neoclassical piano, strings and orchestra.” The composer detailed how he combined the Duke’s past and present through the incorporation of darker electronics and modular and analog synths, all in an effort “to help convey the challenges and darker undercurrents that [Harry and Meghan] have been facing.”

But despite his success, there were points in his career where “he doesn’t feel he’s been recognized,” says filmmaker Lisa Cortés. Her latest documentary, “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” in theaters on April 21, seeks to remind a new generation of his legacy. Cortés says the documentary draws parallels with “All In: The Fight for Democracy” which she co-directed with Liz Garbus, in which she followed Stacy Abrams on her political campaign. Speaking with Variety, she said, “Both of these films are talking about issues that are political hot buttons. There are states where Black and queer history are under attack, and they’re passing laws against the teaching of this history. We see those are very important parts of Richard’s origin story and of rock ‘and’n’ roll.” She adds, “It’s a film that is still in conversation with many major things that we are facing right now.”
