EXCLUSIVE: Following a first season that saw strong reviews and record viewing numbers, Marvel is now getting the wheels in motion for the second season of Loki as Deadline is hearing Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have come on to co-direct a majority of the episodes for the upcoming season two with Tom Hiddleston returning in the role of Loki. Hiddleston and Michael Waldron, who wrote and served as show runner of season 1, will exec produce with Eric Martin penning all six episodes.

One of the character’s most notable traits is his dissociative identity disorder, which manifests in several distinct personas with defined personalities.

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead go way down the rabbit hole in their new film, “Something In The Dirt,” one of the big standout films from the Sundance Film Festival. A pandemic brainchild of necessity—what can we shoot during the pandemic which is relatively inexpensive but still doable, so we don’t lose our marbles and can stay artistic—“Something In The Dirt” is a trippy, DIY, sci-fi-ish film about a pair of loser (played by the two filmmakers themselves) dudes in dystopic Los Angeles who stumble upon the unexplainable.

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticWhere others might see a crystal ashtray, DIY filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead envision some kind of haunted relic, a portal to another dimension or maybe just the ideal prop on which to base their next screwy sci-fi imagination-tickler. Audiences who’ve experienced a Moorhead&Benson film — eerie vacation-sex nightmare “Spring,” perhaps, or else UFO death-cult puzzler “The Endless” — already know how the pair can spin elaborate mind games out of duct tape, twine and popsicle sticks.

As you’ve hopefully heard by now, and read our review, the Sundance film, “Something In The Dirt” is a big hit. From filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who I like to describe as DIY versions of Christopher Nolan—that is to say ambitious, cerebral, complex sci-fi, horror, and genre films, but done on a lo-fi scale—“Something In The Dirt” is a swirl of all their previous heady, high-concept ideas, but with a big dose of humor and a deep look at the world of phenomenon, conspiracy theories and even pareidolia or apophenia (essentially the phenomenon of seeing patterns, consistencies and correlations of things that just aren’t there).

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead work in such a specific, sui generis key and style, producing such exciting results on a small scale, that it’s genuinely shocking they haven’t been swooped up by the Tentpole Industrial Complex and asked to feed their gifts into the content machine. The conglomerates’ loss is our gain; their latest fusion of science fiction, character drama, dark comedy, and overwhelming paranoia, “Something in the Dirt,” feels like their most personal film – and not just because they wear so many hats, directing and writing and producing and editing and starring.

The film had its premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition lineup at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel‘s Phase 4 finally launched last year, and the driving force of this sequence of films/shows is to introduce lesser-known superheroes into the fold. So far, that’s included the likes of Shang-Chi, the titular team in “Eternals,” and Kate Bishop and Echo in “Hawkeye,” among others.

When indie production companies begin to work in the distribution space, it’s important for them to launch with something great. And for XYZ Films, the company is setting its first feature distribution to be the new film, “Something in the Dirt,” from two of the most exciting directors working today.

XYZ Films has opened a domestic distribution wing and has hired former Drafthouse Films and Neon COO James Emanuel Shapiro as Executive Vice President of U.S. Distribution.

Marvel Studios has added two more directors for their upcoming Disney+ series “Moon Knight.” The Hollywood Reporter reveals that indie filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have joined Egyptian director Mohamed Diab on the supernatural hero show (Moorehead confirmed the news on Twitter, see below). The pair are reportedly working on “multiple episodes,” but an exact number wasn’t given.

From their debut, the two-man show “Resolution,” critics have been stoking the flames of their work, though the audiences have remained cult-like in their following, even with big names such as director Guillermo del Toro singing their praises.

Well Go USA has released the first full trailer for its mind and time-bending thriller Synchronic, starring Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. The mainstream crossover debut for indie directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, the creative team behind 2017's similarly trippy sci-fi horror film The Endless, Synchronicfollows two New Orleans paramedics, Steve (Mackie) and Dennis (Dornan).

You might not know the work of filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, but one, you should change that, and two, will deliver some kind of mind-bending genre exploration that’s either laced with horror, sci-fi, or both. Benson and Moorehead, are known for strange mash-ups like the romantic body horror “Spring,” (2014) and the science-fiction horror about cults, “The Endless” (2014) and movies that are lower-budget, but inventive and resourceful nonetheless.

Judging by the box office results of “Tenet” thus far, it is clear that now is not the time to release a blockbuster film. However, with the rise of drive-ins and the lack of major studio fare (up until recently, that is), indie films have enjoyed some pretty great box office runs since theaters have reopened after being shut down due to COVID-19.

Justin Benson is best known on the genre circuit as being one half of the directing team behind the stunning films Resolution, Spring and The Endless. Working with Aaron Moorhead the pair tend to not only direct their movies, but also write, produce and star in them when the opportunity arises.

If you’re a fan of modern genre films then it’s more than likely that you’ll be familiar with the face of actor Jeremy Gardener. In the last few years he has made appearances in films such as Bliss, Fingers, and Sadistic Intentions to name just a few. What you might not be aware of however, is his background in writing and directing. His first film The Battery, released in 2012, was met with a positive response and now comes After Midnight. 

There’s a monster terrorizing screenwriter/co-director Jeremy Gardner’s protagonist in “After Midnight,” and he doesn’t know why, what it is or where it came from. After 83 minutes, we still don’t know, either, but at least it has become clear this is one of those films that “defies categorization” by identifying with a marketable genre it’s nonetheless not really interested in.
