Pre-taping a message was star and executive producer Quinta Brunson, who wasn’t able to attend — as she’s hosting tonight’s installment of “Saturday Night Live.”

The WGAs are not televised but rather held at concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York City. “Abbott Elementary” star Janelle James hosted the West Coast edition, while comedian Michelle Buteau (“First Wives Club,” “The Circle”) is leading the New York festivities. A bellwether for the Academy Awards, the WGAs may indicate which film will take home statuettes for the Oscars’ original and adapted screenplay categories. Daniels’ awards frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which recently picked up awards from the Directors Guild, Producers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, will once again battle it out with Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner’s “The Fabelmans” and Todd Field’s “Tár.” The guild also celebrates the year’s finest in television, with nominations for top dramas “Severance” and “Better Call Saul” and comedy favorites “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.”

The creator and star of ABC's  earned two wins during the pre-awards festivities which precede Saturday's main ceremony, including Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Television). «It means the world to me,» the actress told ET on the red carpet when asked how it feels to have the recently renewed show recognized by an awards ceremony honoring Black artists across television, music, literature and film.

Janelle James, the actor whose role as principal Ava Coleman on “Abbott Elementary” earned her an Emmy nomination, has been named host of the 75th annual Writers Guild Awards on the West Coast. “I am honored to be hosting the WGA Awards this year,” James said in a statement. “I was told that I can say whatever I want. And after making sure that was true and that it would not be televised…that’s exactly what I’m going to do.” Hugh Fink, executive producer of the awards show, quipped, “A few years ago, when I first worked with the hilarious and fearless Janelle James, my goal was to get her to host the WGA Awards. To commemorate this amazing event, all nominees will be receiving a $10,000 cash gift, redeemable at all participating FTX Bitcoin Exchanges.”

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large When Sheryl Lee Ralph first read Quinta Brunson’s pilot script to “Abbott Elementary,” she knew exactly which character she wanted to play: Ava Coleman, the inappropriate principal who only seems to have her own best interests at heart. But Brunson had another idea. “She was just short of [saying,]  ‘Oh, hell no!’” Ralph says. “She said, ‘We need a queen for Barbara Howard. And you are that queen!’ And I was just like, ‘Baby, if you put it that way, How do I say no? What else do I need to know about that? I’m going to be the queen. I love it. Yes, I’m ready.’” Janelle James wound up being cast as Ava, and landed an Emmy nomination this year for the role. But tapping Ralph to play Barbara, the no-nonsense, seen-it-all veteran teacher in “Abbott Elementary,” also turned out to be the right move. On Monday night, Ralph was rewarded with an Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.
