CANNES – To be frank, it’s hard to explain Olivier Assayas‘ impressive new limited series “Irma Vep” with a simple logline. It’s primarily about a modern-day movie star, Mira (Alicia Vikander), who is starring in a new limited series inspired by the classic French silent film “Les Vampires” which also inspired a 1997 film, “Irma Vep.” In the HBO series, the director (Vincent Lacoste), is remaking his own movie of “Irma Vep” into a limited series, just like Assayas is in real life.

1996s “Irma Vep” saw Olivier Assayas contribute to a rich tapestry of meta cinema stretching back to Federico Fellini’s 1963 masterpiece “8½.” Itself drawing upon François Truffaut’s metafictional “Day For Night” as a direct source, the film followed René Vidal, an over-the-hill film director whose recent output has descended into alienating pseudo-intellectualism, and his attempt to remake the classic French film serial, “Les Vampires.” Introducing veteran of Hong Kong cinema, Maggie Cheung, to a western audience, playing herself as an actress cast in the fictional director’s film as Irma (keeping up?), Assayas’ film contemplated the nature of the creative process, using its verité aesthetic to capture the mania of a film set while also providing a broader meditation on the state of modern French cinema.

The project is a remake of the French film “Les Vampires,” which got a cinematic remake, also directed by Assayas, starring Maggie Chung back in 1996.

“Irma Vep” wasn’t Olivier Assayas‘ first film to premiere at Cannes, (that’d be his 1994 breakthrough ‘Cold Water‘), but the 1996 film is the one that made him a star. And not just a star: the success of “Irma Vep” made Assayas an overnight sensation in French cinema.

HBO has set a June premiere date for Irma Vep, its limited series based on Olivier Assayas’ 1996 feature film, starring Alicia Vikander. Irma Vep, which will world premiere as an Official Selection at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, will debut on Monday, June 6 at 9 PM on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Zack Sharf Alicia Vikander opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about the importance of intimacy coordinators on set, revealing she has felt unprotected on sets in the past while doing nude scenes. The Oscar winner said that intimacy coordinators “should have existed at the beginning of my career,” and she described one instance where an actor performed a nude scene and then was left naked on set “for a couple hours” because no one showed up with a robe.“The only thing that can’t be improvised is an intimate scene — you have to make choreography and stick to it,” Vikander said. “It’s the worst thing ever to do those scenes.

Selome Hailu Netflix announced that Louis Hofmann, Lars Eidinger and Nell Sutton have been cast in “All the Light We Cannot See,” the upcoming limited series adapted from Anthony Doerr’s World War II-set novel of the same name.The four-part series stars debut actor Aria Mia Loberti as Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French teenager who crosses paths  with a young German soldier named Werner Pfennig. Hofmann plays Werner, who is described as quiet and soulful with “a strong moral compass in a complicated world.” Together, he and Marie-Laure must learn to survive the devastation of the war in occupied France.

Louis Hofmann (Dark, Land of Mine) is set as the male lead opposite Aria Mia Loberti in Netflix’s All The Light We Cannot See, a four-part limited series adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller, from Shawn Levy and Steven Knight. Also cast in the series Lars Eidinger (White Noise, Irma Vep) and newcomer Nell Sutton.
