The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is so fraught and thorny most filmmakers these days who are not of Israeli or Palestinian heritage or from somewhere nearby the region generally tend to steer clear of all the loaded burdens and pitfalls. Versatile filmmaker Michael Winterbottom, however, is braver and/or has less compunction about that—for better and perhaps for worse.

Edgar Allan Poe turns detective in “The Pale Blue Eye,” an 1830s-set Gothic mystery that explores the writer’s formative years at the West Point military academy in upstate New York.  Written and directed by Scott Cooper, who adapted Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name, the Netflix film (streaming on January 6) stars Christian Bale as Augustus Landor, a hard-bitten detective haunted by a past tragedy.

If you believe Christian Bale is one of our finest working actors, then you must make sense of his continued collaboration with writer/director Scott Cooper. Their latest joint, Netflix’s “The Pale Blue Eye,” marks a trinity of team-ups for Bale and Cooper.

Murder early American style is pointedly served cold in The Pale Blue Eye, a fancifully gruesome account of killings at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, circa 1832, that attracts the attention of a certain Edgar Allan Poe, among others. Handsomely made in the dead of winter and generally adept at playing its dramatic cards, the film’s intrigue stems from the unusual academic setting, the ritualistic freakishness of the killings, the intelligence of the characters and the admittedly narrow portrait of a United States still just getting on its feet.

“The Pale Blue Eye” marks the latest collaboration between Christian Bale and Scott Cooper. The two have previously worked together on “Out of the Furnace,” which was met with massive critical praise for both talents, while their previous collaboration, “Hostiles,” wasn’t as well-received.

Who would’ve thought that ten years removed from the “Harry Potter” franchise, the most interesting and consistent actor to come out of that young ensemble would be the kid who played Dudley Dursley, of all people? Yet with “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” Harry Melling has accumulated a pretty impressive CV.

Camp’s an acquired taste, but when it’s good, it is oh so good. Case in point: Amanda Kramer‘s “Please Baby Please,” fresh off its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year.

Only, instead of the Jets, we have the “Young Gents,” a group of leather-clad rascals who dance their way through the streets of a neon-tinged, foggy 1950s Manhattan before descending on an unsuspecting couple and, well, beating them to death.

Marta Balaga Chosen as the protagonist of the Rotterdam Film Festival’s Focus section, Amanda Kramer will show eight films to the festival audience, ranging from her 2016 short “Bark” to “Give Me Pity!” and this year’s opener “Please Baby Please,” both set to celebrate their world premieres at the festival.“It’s a funny thing, to be a relatively obscure artist given this very pronounced focus on your work,” Kramer tells Variety. “When Rotterdam was so keen to show it, I was just elated. Even so, the basic premise sees Lord Macbeth (Denzel Washington), a well-respected soldier, spurred by three witches’ prophecy and the aspirations of his wife, the Machiavellian Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand), transfixed by an ambition for the Scottish crown.
