Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis has transformed into a legendary military commander in the first look at the upcoming film “The Woman King.” The TriStar Pictures feature hails from director Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard,” “Love & Basketball”) and is based on the untold story of The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.Davis stars as Nanisca, the general of an all-female military unit who fights enemies who threaten her kingdom. The performer is coming off her first Oscar win for 2020’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” in which she played iconic artist Ma Rainey.

It’s no surprise that Netflix is working on a sequel to “The Old Guard.” Right after the first film debuted last year, the streaming platform was quick to tout massive viewership numbers and say it is one of the most-watched pieces of original content the streamer has released. So, while we are definitely getting “The Old Guard 2,” it doesn’t appear that the original film’s director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, is going to return to the new franchise.

EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, MGM has secured feature rights to Minnie Schedeen’s short story Exoplanet. The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood is attached to helm, and Matt Tolmach (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Venom, Morbius) and David Manpearl are attached to produce for Matt Tolmach Productions.
