Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Pascal Breton’s European banner Federation Entertainment (“The Bureau”) has acquired a majority stake in Vertigo Films, the U.K. production company behind the hit TV shows “Britannia” and “Bulletproof.” The London-based company is also the producer of B.O. films such as “StreetDance 3D,” “The Sweeney” and award-winning titles including Gareth Edwards’s “Monsters” and Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Bronson.“ Founded 20 years ago by executive producers Allan Niblo and James Richardson, Vertigo is currently in post-production with Jez Butterworth’s new comedy-drama series “Mammals,” starring James Corden and Sally Hawkins for Amazon, and the 1980s-set gangster epic “A Town Called Malice” by Nick Love for Sky Max. The banner just wrapped principal photography on a new film for Sky Cinema, with further details to be announced at a later date.  

Tony Gilroy didn’t want to make a prequel to “Rogue One.” The 2016 “Star Wars” feature, which Gilroy co-wrote, is itself a prequel, detailing how a ragged crew of rebels, led by spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), steal the plans to the Death Star. They succeed, but (spoiler alert!) they all sacrifice their lives doing so — an uncharacteristically dour ending for a “Star Wars” endeavor. The production was also infamously troubled, with Gilroy, who wrote four “Bourne” movies and directed “Michael Clayton,” stepping in to helm extensive reshoots in place of director Gareth Edwards. When the result was a massive hit, grossing just over $1 billion worldwide, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was eager do more “Star Wars” movies with Gilroy.

Tony Gilroy has been working on the new Lucasfilm and Disney+ live-action series “Andor” for over three years. The prequel to Gareth Edwards “Rogue One” follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) during the five years before the events of that particular film.

Update: With the lack of major studio product in the fall, and Lionsgate’s Judy Blume movie, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret heading to the end of April 2023, Searchlight is going to have a moderate theatrical release with their comedy caper See How They Run, and moving it up to Sept. 16.

EXCLUSIVE: Marc Menchaca (Ozark) has signed on to star alongside André Holland, Don Cheadle, Alessandro Nivola and Tiffany Boone in the six-episode limited series The Big Cigar, centered on Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton (Holland), for Apple TV+.

Selome Hailu Allison Janney has been cast as Evelyn in “Mrs. American Pie,” Apple TV+’s upcoming comedy series starring Kristen Wiig with Laura Dern executive producing and eyeing a key role.Evelyn is described as a full-time Palm Beach resident and member of the high society that Maxine Simmons (Wiig) attempts to secure her place in. Set in the powder keg era of the early ‘70s, the series will follow Maxine as she navigates the line between the haves and the have-nots, the series focuses on questions of who gets a seat at the table and what people will sacrifice to get there.Janney is known for playing C.J.

Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney has been tapped to star alongside Kristen Wiig in Apple comedy series Mrs. American Pie, executive produced by Laura Dern. Based on Juliet McDaniel’s book, Mrs. American Pie hails from creator Abe Sylvia (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and director Tate Taylor (Breaking News in Yuba County). Dern also is eyeing a “key role” in the series.

Godzilla, has died aged 87.His death was confirmed yesterday (March 17) in a tweet from Toho Studios, the production company behind the influential 1954 monster film.“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Akira Takarada,” the tweet reads. “May his memory continue to inspire the lives of many Godzilla fans.”The cause of death hasn’t been disclosed.Takarada played Hideto Ogata in the original Godzilla, a sailor who works with the Japanese Coast Guard after the monster sinks a ship.

Manori Ravindran International EditorAmar Chadha-Patel has been cast in Gareth Edwards’ forthcoming sci-fi pic “True Love.”The up-and-coming British actor will appear as multiple characters that are called “Simulants” in the movie, and include Satra, Sergeant Bui and Inspector Omni. Details about the film are still being kept under lock and key, and all that’s known is that it’s set in the near future.
