At just 23 years old, Eliza Scanlen has already amassed one of the most formidable filmographies of her Zoomer peers. “The Starling Girl” is just the latest addition to a sterling résumé packed with commercial success and indie darlings alike.
Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic From “Saved!” to “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” Sundance movies tend to paint fundamentalist Christians as severe, cult-like zealots, hellbent on brainwashing the next generation. While such portrayals can certainly be cathartic for those scarred by conservative upbringings, it’s a refreshing change to see this milieu treated with the level of nuance that Laurel Parmet brings to “The Starling Girl.” Set in a small Kentucky town where morality is strictly enforced, Parmet’s promising, evenhanded debut focuses on a religious teen (“Little Women” star Eliza Scanlen) who’s never had reason to question her faith, until a crush on her handsome youth pastor (Lewis Pullman) awakens her sexuality and scandalizes the community. For the adults in this repressive rural enclave, organized religion seems to provide the discipline and structure they seek. But for 17-year-old Jem Starling, their values are starting feel like a straitjacket.
Despite everyone’s differences in upbringing, growing up is a difficult experience that is universal and nondenominational. While we all know this and have seen countless coming-of-age films that tackle the difficulty of discovering yourself, your wants, and your dreams, Laurel Parmet’s “The Starling Girl” puts a twist on the genre that explores Christianity, crushes, and power dynamics. From the trailer, you can tell that this is going to be an emotional story following seventeen-year-old Jem Starling as she struggles to define her place within her fundamentalist community in Kentucky.
Emma Watson is opening up about the reasons why she is taking an acting break. Watson, who rose to fame starring in the Harry Potter franchise as Hermione Granger, said that she “wasn’t very happy.”

Richard Pryor used to do a bit on the differences between Black and white churches – one that was often revised and revisited by his many imitators in the decades that followed. But one thing he got particularly right, beyond the lameness of the hymns and the restrained quality of the ministers, is the eerie quiet of white churches, the way that the fires of hell and the sins of man can be described in tones barely more threatening than a hot dish recipe.

Eliza Scanlen has described the emotional impact of shaving her head for her new film Babyteeth.
Young-adult romances are often so stifled by genre conventions that Babyteeth immediately feels distinctive just by mashing several different romance types together. It’s partially about a well-behaved teenage girl named Milla (Eliza Scanlen from Sharp Objects) who falls for a drug-dealing bad boy named Moses (Toby Wallace), much to the chagrin of her well-to-do parents Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) and Anna (Essie Davis).
He might not be a household name yet, at least in terms of where mainstream filmmaking and fandom is concerned, but writer/director Antonio Campos has been slowly building an impressive body of auteur-driven work that has dazzled the arthouse for years (2012’s deeply underrated “Simon Killer” and 2017’s “Christine” starring Rebecca Hall).
