It comes as no surprise that for her feature directorial debut Maggie Gyllenhaal would choose the challenging job of adapting Italian author Elena Ferrante’s searingly compact novel The Lost Daughter which just made its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival and next heads to Telluride this weekend.

HBO has pulled the plug on The Days of Abandonment, the film based on Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel, that was to star Natalie Portman.

The premise of My Brilliant Friend — both Elena Ferrante's celebrated Neapolitan Novels and the Italian TV adaptation thereof — is largely sociological. Two girls in midcentury Naples, gifted with intellect and ambition, diverge dramatically in their paths when one, Elena (Margherita Mazzucco), is permitted to continue her formal education, and the other, Lila (Gaia Girace), is forced to end hers after elementary school.

In venturing out of the Luzzatti quarter of Naples where most of the first season of “My Brilliant Friend” is set, the second season, subtitled “The Story of a New Name,” breaks new ground in several ways that are key to understanding the show’s overall vision and ambitious aesthetic scope.
