Thania Garcia Shakira and Fuerza Regida defend the working class and tell off bad bosses everywhere in the new music video for their joint single “El Jefe,” or “The Boss.” “You’re dreaming of leaving the barrio, you have everything it takes to be a millionaire, expensive taste, the mentality, you’re just missing a salary,” Shakira sings over a bouncy, acoustic guitar-driven beat. Fuerza Regida’s frontman Jesus Ortiz Paz joins in adding, “Being poor is trash, my mom always told me studying would secure everything but I studied and nothing happened.” The video sees Shakira and members of Fuerza Regida alluding to the struggles and efforts of the working class — at one point their heads appear on silver platters for men in suits.

Thania Garcia Ana Bárbara, otherwise known as “Grupera Queen,” received her flowers as a BMI Icon at the 30th annual BMI Latin Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on March 21. The singer — whose blended style of rancheras, norteño and Latin pop helped to define the grupero genre — became the first regional Mexican songwriter to receive the accolade for her musical career which spans over 30 years of chart-topping hits like “Bandido” and “Lo Busqué,” which dominated radio across Mexico and the United States. It was a big night for música Mexicana as Edgar Barrera, one of the most sought-after songwriters and producers of the last few years, was given the first-ever Impact award for his award-winning contributions across genres like contemporary Latin and regional Mexican. Throughout the night, he returned to the stage to accept over 10 trophies as the most recognized songwriter at this year’s ceremony. (He was also the top-nominated act at last year’s Latin Grammys.)

Marshmello Helps Manuel Turizo Move On in Post-Break Up ‘El Merengue’ Video

Thania Garcia Marshmello is helping Manuel Turizo get over his ex in a new music video for the duo’s first cross-genre collaboration titled “El Merengue.” On Thursday, the duo premiered the track that puts a fresh spin on merengue with layered electro beats and Turizo’s rich baritone vocals. The video, directed by Chadrick Preuss and Sandeep Vadlamudi, follows a lovestruck Turizo who is hung up on an ex-flame that he casually runs into one night at a crowded nightclub. In the heat of the moment, the Colombian singer and his ex sway to the rhythms of the sultry merengue beat. Overtaken by rekindled emotions — and liquid courage — Turizo ends up retching into the nightclub’s toilet while an unmasked Marshmello listens from the next stall over.

Beyonce Collaborators, Country Titans: Who Will Be the First-Ever Grammy Songwriter of the Year?

Thania Garcia The newly created Grammy Award for songwriter of the year is shaping up to be a tight race, with 62 potential nominees in contention, including such major hitmakers as The-Dream, Amy Allen, Natalie Hemby (pictured above, L-R), Justin Tranter, James Fauntleroy, Shane McAnally, Ali Tamposi, Kat Dahlia, Edgar Barrera, Omer Fedi, Scott Harris, Tobias Jesso Jr., Desmond Child, and dozens more. The names might not be familiar to everyone, and that’s exactly the point: the award is intended to “honors the people whose job is to write songs for others,” Evan Bogart, a Grammy-winning songwriter and chair of the Academy’s songwriters and composers wing, told Variety earlier this month (and whose name is also on the list). “It’s for the ones who can say, ‘Hey, I’m not performing at the Grammys; I’m not on the cover of Rolling Stone and you’re not going to know my name — but you’re singing my melodies and lyrics.’” The songwriters on the list have written for artists ranging from Beyonce, Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes to Maren Morris and Blake Shelton, and many others.
