Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth will team for an action thriller called “Land of Bad” to be directed by “Underwater” filmmaker Will Eubank. The project will kick off principal photography in September in Australia, and Highland Film Group is coming aboard the project to represent international sales rights and present it to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

Katcy Stephan It’s been four years since The Avenue first launched, and the indie distributor just scored its first top 10 film with William Eubank’s “Land of Bad.” The action flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia opened on Feb. 16, had the fourth-highest per screen average over the holiday weekend and was the only independent film in the top 10. While indie films in awards contention can often make a modest box office dent, it’s unusual for an action film like “Land of Bad” to reach such heights: the actioner’s four-day total on opening weekend was $2.1 million from 1,057 screens.

EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of its world premiere at SXSW, the Nicolas Cage thriller Arcadian has been acquired by RLJE Films, in a deal for North America, UK, Australia and Ireland rights. Also starring Jaeden Martell (It), Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space), and Sadie Soverall (Saltburn), the film will be released in theaters on April 12, with a debut on Shudder and AMC+ to follow later in the year.

Anna Marie de la Fuente High-concept horror film “Rosario” is getting a stellar cast. David Dastmalchian (“Oppenheimer“), José Zúñiga (“Twilight”), Diana Lein (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Paul Ben-Victor (“The Irishman”) and Emilia Faucher (“CODA”) will join rising star Emeraude Toubia (“Shadowhunters”) in the pic. Penned by Alan Trezza (“We Summon the Darkness”), the story, set in New York, revolves around Rosario (Toubia), a successful Wall Street stockbroker who is trapped in her estranged grandmother Griselda’s apartment during a snowstorm.

Brent Lang Executive Editor RLJE announced today it has acquired North American rights to “Muzzle,” an action thriller starring Aaron Eckhart,from Highland Film Group. Directed by John Stalberg Jr. (“Crypto”) and based on a script by Carlyle Eubank (“The Signal”) from a story byEubank and Stalberg Jr., the film is set to debut in theaters and will be made available on all rental platforms on Sept.

EXCLUSIVE: After hitting 300 North American theaters via The Avenue last fall, the action thriller The System, starring Tyrese Gibson, Terrence Howard, Jeremy Piven and Lil Yachty, has been set to premiere on Starz on July 1st. The film will have its linear premiere there at 12:00 p.m. ET on July 6th, also airing that night at 11:30 p.m. ET.

EXCLUSIVE: AMC Networks’ business unit RLJE Films and its genre streaming service Shudder have acquired North American rights to the Neil Marshall-directed horror film The Lair from Highland Film Group, with the latter also picking up the rights for UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. RLJE Films will release the pic in theaters and on digital and VOD on October 28, with Shudder bringing it to streaming early next year.

Jimenez (“Machete Kills”), Héctor Jiménez (“Nacho Libre”), Raúl Méndez (“Narcos”), Edgar Flores (“Sin Nombre”), Venus Ariel (“DMZ”) and Carlos Solórzano (“Flamin’ Hot”).Written by Boise Esquerra, the film will wrap principal photography at the end of January on location in the Dominican Republic.Developed by Mucho Mas Media and Silk Mass, “The Black Demon” is co-financed by Highland Film Group (HFG), which is representing worldwide rights to the film.
