Over the past year, production designers needed to get creative in how they approach their work on films or television shows. For Solos, that involved production designer Ruth Ammon adapting to a completely virtual art department from home. “We were building 3D designs,” Ammon says, “and we actually had a virtual reality designer who would take our designs and turn them into proper virtual reality sets.”

“Solos” is one of those projects that historians will look at years from now and instantly recognize as a COVID-19 production. One or two actors performing in one closed set and a short story that finds them mostly speaking to themselves or, in some cases, other versions of themselves.

Producer/creator David Weil (the writer behind the controversial “Hunters”) returns to Amazon Prime with this week’s “Solos,” a pandemic production filmed in late 2020 that wastes so much talent that it can be almost hard to comprehend how this many award winners fell victim to its thin ideas and manipulative melodrama.
