The journey to write Amazon's Sound of Metal took well over a decade. But for writer-director Darius Marder and his writing partner and brother, Abraham Marder, that length of time was necessary to tell a "universal story" that explores "something that is pervasively human." The film follows Ruben (Riz Ahmed) and his girlfriend, Lou (Olivia Cooke), who perform as the heavy-metal duo Blackgammon.

For an independently made film, Amazon’s Sound of Metal has some remarkably complex and sophisticated technical challenges, including its intricate sound design. “We went for it, “ writer-director Darius Marder says of the unique sound work the film called for. “My brother said he wished we had a documentary crew covering because it was such a crazy process. We really pushed the boundaries. It is hard to understand what it really took to get it to work.”

In a year that has stymied many of his peers, Riz Ahmed has been incredibly prolific, with two 2020 feature releases—Darius Marder’s Sound of Metal and Bassam Tariq’s Mogul Mowgli—as well as an album, The Long Goodbye, which came with a powerful short imagining life in a racist, post-Brexit Britain.
