Last week, Emma Stone and Emma Thompson starrer Cruella hit theatre screens in the US and there's been plenty of talk regarding the iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil's dark backstory as aspiring fashion designer Estella Miller transforms into the notorious criminal.

While theatres in India are far from opening any time soon due to the deadly second wave of the Covid 19 pandemic, North America is back to the movies. This past weekend two big budget films, namely John Krasinski's A Quiet Place Part II and Craig Gillespie's Cruella, opened to audiences across the US and various parts of North America.

“Joker” as everyone assumed, but it is to “I, Tonya,” director Craig Gillespie’s Oscar-winning crime drama with Margot Robbie as figure skater Tonya Harding. And one wonders how anyone who saw that movie would think Gillespie would be perfect for a Disney movie.But Gillespie tells TheWrap that going into “Cruella” directly from “I, Tonya,” Disney knew exactly what they were getting into with his twisted, zany, punk rock take on the classic “101 Dalmatians” villain.

As we’ve seen so many times before, it appears that Hollywood has yet another case of twin productions, with two Mike Tyson biopic series currently in development.

“People need a villain to believe in,” says the snarky two-toned haired Cruella (Emma Stone). Based on the Dalmatian thieving megalomaniac fashion designer that first cackled her way through a 1961 Disney animated film, “101 Dalmatians,” and the 1996 same-titled live-action feature, this iteration of the character is caught between villainous madcap swings and heroic revenge.

Reimagining the origin story of an iconic villain such as Cruella de Vil was likely a no-brainer for Walt Disney Studios executives. Casting Emma Stone probably gave it the greenlight.

Hulu is standing firm with its Mike Tyson biopic series despite a few jabs from the former world champion boxer.

Craig Gillespie, who directed the film, will direct and executive produce the series.

Unlike most assumptions, the highly-anticipated live-action film, “Cruella,” is not skipping theaters and not going straight to Disney+ for subscribers. The film still has a release date of May, 2021.
