A good period drama, with terrific acting, is a longtime staple of cinema. Last year, on the festival circuit, one such movie made the rounds in The World to Come.

After the critical success of “A Portrait of a Lady On Fire” two years ago, it’s no surprise that there’s a modest influx of lesbian-themed period pieces following in that film’s lofty wake. Two upcoming movies certainly fit that mold, and arguably the more anticipated is Mona Fastvold‘s “The World To Come” (“Ammonite” being the other).

Premiering back at Sundance 2020, “Black Bear” might not have made waves equal in size to some (hello “Minari” and “Palm Springs”), but it certainly caused a stir among critics.

Being the son of one of Canada’s most heralded genre filmmakers casts a large shadow often resulting in tired comparisons between their respective works that might not have been drawn otherwise. The desire for film fans to group filmmakers together due to familial ties isn’t exactly a new concept (even if it is unfair), however, it is something Brandon Cronenberg has had to grapple with his entire filmmaking career.

It’s not easy to put the upcoming film, “Black Bear,” in a specific genre category. And the new trailer for the feature doesn’t do us any favors showcasing what is a chaotic film that blends comedy, thriller, and dramatic aspects into a mish-mash that somehow works…really well.
