The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe writer has explained the reason why a kayak has been used on the ITV drama.The four-part TV drama is airing over four consecutive nights to tell the true story of John and Anne Darwin, portrayed by actors Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan. John faked his own death after going out to sea in his red canoe to claim life insurance and avoid bankruptcy, the drama focuses on how Anne became complicit in her husband’s deception.

The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe viewers will get a shock on Tuesday night as comedian Karl Pilkington makes his drama debut in the ITV show.The show tells the real life story of conman John Darwin, who faked his own death in 2002 by going canoeing and failing to return home – with only his wife Anne knowing that he was secret living in a bedsit next door to their house. But viewers were left gobsmacked as An Idiot Abroad star Karl, 49, appeared in episode three of the drama, which is already streaming online on ITV Hub.
