Watch Wilco join Yo La Tengo to cover The Beatles, Bob Dylan at Chicago show

Yo La Tengo brought out Wilco for the encore of their show at Metro in Chicago last night, during which they performed four covers together. The bands ran through the Beatles‘ ‘She’s A Woman’, Bob Dylan‘s ‘Love Minus Zero/No Limit’, the Heartbreakers’ ‘One Track Mind’ and Fairport Convention’s ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes?’.After Wilco departed the stage, Yo La Tengo signed off on their set with another cover, ‘Yellow Sarong’ by The Scene Is Now. Earlier in their set, the band covered Wilco’s ‘If I Ever Was A Child’.Check out their covers below:At an earlier stop on their current US tour this month, Yo La Tengo made headlines by playing a show in Nashville, Tennessee in drag to protest the state’s restrictive new drag law.Earlier this month, Tennessee became the first US state to sign a law banning “adult cabaret” on public property or anywhere it could be seen by children, including “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest, or similar entertainers”.The statute – which means a ban on drag performances in public spaces, set to take effect on April 1 – and similar laws, are reportedly being pushed in other Republic-run states. The band made no direct mention of the new law, but said in a statement (via Pitchfork): “What we did last night couldn’t have been clearer, and requires no further comment.”The band released a new album, ‘This Stupid World’, in February.

David Lindley, Instrumental Virtuoso Known for Guitar Work With Jackson Browne, Dies at 78

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic David Lindley, a virtuoso guitarist and multi-instrumentalist best known to many for his work with Jackson Browne, as well as a recording and touring artist in his own right, died Friday at age 78. No cause of death was immediately given. The musician had been known to have been ailing for some time. A family member posted late last year that Lindley had been repeatedly hospitalized for kidney issues, pneumonia and influenza; a fundraiser that had been recently set up for Lindley and his family said his medical issues “seem to have begun with a terrible bout of Long Covid.” “The loss of David Lindley is a huge one,” tweeted Jason Isbell. “Without his influence my music would sound completely different. I was genuinely obsessed with his playing from the first time I heard it. The man was a giant.”

Elvis Costello on His Love for Burt Bacharach and the New Boxed Set of Their Collaborations: Burt’s Legacy ‘Didn’t Need Any Help From Me’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic What the world needs now is Burt, sweet Burt, and there’s a bereft feeling to be had in knowing we won’t be getting any more of the haunting, mind-twisting melodies that characterized the composer’s work over a period of more than six decades of sumptuous pop. But Burt Bacharach left a gift behind — something he actually held the finished product of in his hands, before he died Feb. 8 at age 94: “The Songs of Bacharach & Costello,” a deluxe boxed set of the material he worked on with Elvis Costello from the mid-’90s on up till nearly the present day. As anthologized by Costello with Steve Berkowitz (who also helps assemble Bob Dylan’s “Bootleg Series” sets), the new collection is a worthy testament to a true maestro who was doing some of the best work of his life in his final decades.

Will Rihanna’s Super Bowl Show Help Her Steal the Momentum From ‘RRR’ in Oscars’ Best Song Race?

Jon Burlingame Will Oscar voters choose a superstar or go for a high-energy dance number from an Indian-language film? That’s the dilemma facing voters as they mull over the five best song nominees for 2022 – and voting begins today. Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Lady Gaga (“Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”) and ex-Talking Heads frontman David Byrne (“This Is a Life” from “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) are in the running. Yet, even with all that star power, the presumptive frontrunner of late has been seen as “Naatu Naatu,” from the Telugu film “RRR.” It all depends on what’s caught the fancy of voters during the run-up to the six-day voting period. Oscar history is rife with examples of songs that outpolled the expected picks at the last minute, simply because voters couldn’t escape the radio play (or, nowadays, TikTok) of the newest hit.

'Daisy Jones & The Six' Cast Reveals Bob Dylan Visited Their Recording Studio (Exclusive)

may tell the story of a fictional band, but they're rubbing shoulders with some very real musical influences. The cast of Amazon's upcoming adaptation of the ultra-popular novel told ET's Nischelle Turner that Bob Dylan paid a visit to their recording studio. «It was insane,» Suki Waterhouse, who plays band member Karen, said of the experience. «He had a tour bus outside of Sound City.»Sound City is the iconic Los Angeles recording studio where the cast recorded the album on which the book focuses. Blake Mills, producer of the show's soundtrack, has also previously worked with Dylan. Author Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote many of 's lyrics for the book, but the show will now bring the fictional music to life. Camila Morrone, who plays Camila, wife of band leader Billy, added that the cast tried to stay focused on their own work despite being utterly starstruck. «When Bob Dylan's making music you just let him do his thing,» she said with a chuckle.«We tried to stay out of his way,» Waterhouse agreed.Though the Bob Dylan sighting may have been more a moment in passing, the cast certainly had their fair share of epic artistic run-ins while in production. Mills recruited a group of music legends to adapt Reid's and the finished project boasts co-writing credits from Marcus Mumford, Phoebe Bridgers and Jackson Browne.Tony Berg, a frequent collaborator of Bridgers, also provided additional support and the album features instrumental work from David Bowie, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Jeff Beck, Rilo Kiley, The Who, Nine Inch Nails and The Wallflowers. Riley Keough, granddaughter of Elvis Presley, plays Daisy Jones.

The multiple Emmy and Grammy nominee (“Better Call Saul,” “Six Feet Under”) is on board for Johnson’s “Poker Face” starring Natasha Lyonne, who also executive produces the hour-long dark comedy (and co-wrote and directs the eighth episode, “The Orpheus Syndrome”). A former Guild of Music Supervisors president, and three-time GMS Award winner, most notably for “Breaking Bad,” Golubic brings his more than 20 years of music supervision experience to “Poker Face.” The first season put Golubić’s cross-section of skills to the test with hurdles like difficult clearances to on-camera musical performances and creation of original songs. Joan Baez on Visual Memoir Doc ‘I Am a Noise’ in Which She Reveals Abuse From Her Father and Talks Heartbreak by Bob Dylan (EXCLUSIVE)

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent In “Joan Baez: I Am a Noise,” which is premiering on Feb. 17 at the Berlin Film Festival, the folk icon with a supple soprano voice and a long history of activism, takes a disarmingly candid look on her life as she faces the end of her 60-year musical career. The immersive doc is co-directed by Karen O’Connor, Miri Navasky, and Maeve O’Boyle. They interweave Baez’s 2018 Fare Thee Well final concert tour with her early years, her rise to fame, struggles with drugs that ensued, and a darker psychological thread involving a form of child abuse on the part of Baez’s father. A surprising level of intimacy is reached thanks to a wealth of material obtained from Baez’s meticulously preserved personal archives comprising home movies, diaries, artwork, therapy tapes, and audio recordings of voice letters to her family. Some, while Baez was on tour in England in 1965 with Bob Dylan whom, she confesses in the doc, “broke my heart.”

Bob Dylan says using auto-pen to sign books and prints was “an error in judgment”

Bob Dylan has said that allowing an ‘auto-pen’ machine to be used to scrawl his signature onto books and artwork prints was “an error in judgment”.This follows the admission last week from book publisher Simon & Schuster that the “hand signed” copies of Dylan’s new book ‘The Philosophy Of Modern Song’ it had been selling for $599 were not, in fact, hand signed. That admission in turn followed chatter online that the signatures appearing in the signed copies of ‘The Philosophy Of Modern Song’ were all very similar indeed, albeit with some slight variations having seemingly been built into the machine-based signing process. The book firm initially denied that the hand signed books were not hand signed, later implying that it had not been aware that an auto-pen had been used. But once it became clear that technology had been employed, Simon & Schuster issued an apology and pledged to refund all the $599s that had been paid by Dylan’s fans. The man himself admitted in a statement this weekend that the auto-pen has been used to sign artwork prints as well a books.

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan selling their catalogs for $600 million, Genesis and Phil Collins for $300 million, Stevie Nicks for $100 million — over the past few years dozens of artists have sold the rights to their music catalogs for eight or nine figures. There are all kinds of reasons why this is happening: Artists are getting older and are basically estate planning, the pandemic proved that copyrights can be a great investment, and the booming market is bringing more and more buyers and sellers to the table. But what do you do with that catalog once you’ve bought it? The old approach was to basically to sit and wait for the songs to make money — through radio, sales, use in films or TV shows or advertising campaigns, Broadway shows and lots of other ways.
