‘The Simpsons’ Comes To ‘Icons Unearthed’ Picked Up for Season 2 (EXCLUSIVE)

Michaela Zee editorThe Nacelle Company’s “Icons Unearthed” has been renewed for Season 2 by Vice TV, Variety has learned exclusively.In Season 2, the six-part documentary series will focus on long-running animated sitcom “The Simpsons.” Directed by Nacelle Company CEO Brian Volk-Weiss (“The Toys That Made Us,” “The Movies That Made Us”), “Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons” will reveal previously unknown and surprising details about the beloved animated series. The second season also features exclusive interviews with several writers, directors, actors and network executives, including Bill Oakley, Rich Moore, Jon Vitti, Mimi Pond, Doug Benson, Todd McFarlane, Garth Ancier, Phil Roman and Jennifer Howell.“We’re ecstatic to have the second season of our ‘Icons Unearthed’ documentary series officially picked up by Vice TV.

The Simpsons writers have remarked on the plot similarities between episode Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.In the episode, which aired in February 1994, Lisa challenges the creators of Malibu Stacy (Springfield’s equivalent of Barbie) to create a less sexist doll, which results in the development of Lisa Lionheart, a doll designed to positively influence young girls.As noted by Vanity Fair in an interview with the episode’s writers Josh Weinstein and Bill Oakley, it shares many themes with the live-action Barbie.

The Simpsons has admitted misinterpreting a joke on the show for the past 25 years.Josh Weinstein, who worked on The Simpsons between 1992 and 1998, posted on Twitter about a classic Homer Simpson’ line from season five episode ‘Bart Gets Famous’.After Bart goes missing from a school trip, teacher Edna Krabappel phones Homer while he’s at work to alert him of the situation. As he answers the phone with a towel around his waist, Homer says: “You’ll have to speak up, I’m wearing a towel.”In a post on Twitter, Weinstein explained how he believed the joke was a non-sequitur until it was explained to him years later.“I’m proud to say I’ve loved this joke and possibly misinterpreted it for nearly 30 years now,” Weinstein wrote.“For 25 years, I assumed (and loved it) that it was just a non-sequitor but then someone explained it’s what people with long hair say when they have a towel over their wet hair (and ears) after a shower when they answer the phone.
