Alex Garland is behind some fantastic and acclaimed genre projects such as “Ex Machina,” his tech-thriller FX series “DEVS,” and the recent project “Men” starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear. He originally made the jump from author to screenwriter and then made another pivot to directing but doesn’t see himself as a director and might not be doing it for much longer.

Somewhere in the southwest of England is a sprawling stone estate nestled along hedge-lined lanes that you can rent, complete with wood fireplaces, low oak beams, an apple tree in the yard and a room for a baby grand piano. But the listing on Airbnb, Vrbo or Booking.com might not mention one small complication: It comes with a naked dude in the yard.This is where Alex Garland’s sophisticated horror film “Men” is set. All the action takes place in and around this estate, a countryside both sublimely beautiful and yet also grimy and filthy.

There’s that shocker of an ending, of course, but we’ll postpone discussion of that till the penultimate paragraph of this review, so as not to spoil the fun — even if, by the time you see it, “Men” is already likely to be defined by its over-the-top finale.Kinnear, who comes across as a chummy enough fellow — albeit one who might chase you into a back alley and murder you if given the chance — impressively embodies eight different characters: basically, all the men, plus one particularly creepy boy, in a rural English village.

Men writer/director Alex Garland is fascinated with creation and rebirth. His first film Ex Machina focuses on creationism and oppression, his second film Annihilation deals with creation, recreation and the impending apocalypse, while his newest film deals with guilt, trauma and rebirth. This is Garland’s most emotional and abstract work (yes, it’s even abstract by Alex Garland standard), and also his weakest. Not because of the themes or any technical aspects, but because it’s a frustratingly vague piece of work. This extreme level of ambiguity weakens an otherwise haunting thriller about dealing with Post traumatic stress.

His early screenwriting work including the Danny Boyle-directed horror film “28 Days Later” which focused on a post-apocalyptic London after animal activists unleash the “rage virus” upon the United Kingdom and essentially the world.

tantalizing first teaser, the full trailer for the A24 film reveals a stroke of brilliance on Garland’s part: he’s cast actor Rory Kinnear (“Skyfall”) as every male character we see, each of which poses a new and gross threat to Harper as she works through her loss. Quite literally, the trailer appears to be saying, “Yes All Men.”Buckley is coming off an Oscar nomination for her supporting performance in “The Lost Daughter” and a standout role in the HBO series “Chernobyl.” Kinnear, meanwhile, most recently reprised his role in the Bond sequel “No Time to Die” but is also known for his work on the stage.

How many heady horror movies will 2022 have once the calendar year is over? The genre is already off to a great start this year with Ti West‘s “X,” and there’s even more on the way, like Robert Eggers‘ “The Northman” and Jordan Peele‘s “NOPE.” Add Alex Garland‘s “Men” to that list, as his latest film looks like he’s leaning heavily into highbrow horror.

In the wake of the popularity of Charlie Brooker’s fantastic technology thriller anthology series, “Black Mirror,” multiple shows are popping up, continuing the dystopian idea of cautionary tales set within the world of futuristic advances. Alex Garland‘s underrated “DEVS” is an excellent example of a series taking a similar tone to “Black Mirror,” and another show might be trying to fill those shoes with a religious twist.

On Tuesday, The Power of the Dog’s Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee earned their first Oscar nominations for their turns in the Jane Campion film, speaking with Deadline about the film’s stellar reception and upcoming projects including the action epic Civil War, which the former is starring in for Alex Garland, and the Untitled Elvis Presley Project from Baz Luhrmann in which the latter shot a role.

While Alex Garland‘s next film “Men” for A24 is in the can and should come out later this year, his relationship with the indie studio, which released his debut directorial effort, “Ex Machina,” is only growing stronger. According to Deadline, Garland’s follow-up film will be “Civil War,” an original action epic with an American near-future setting with A24 getting involved alongside production company DNA Films.
