Manori Ravindran International EditorNetflix may not have been at the MipTV market in Cannes in any substantial way this year, but the service was certainly front and center in a keynote by HBO Max International boss Johannes Larcher.In a bold presentation, Larcher pointed to his competitor’s international might as a motivating factor for HBO Max’s own growth outside the U.S. In a number of slides dedicated solely to Netflix, the former Hulu exec highlighted the projected growth in Netflix’s international subscribers from 2021 to 2026 (147 subscribers in 2021 to an estimated 266 subscribers by 2026).“Netflix is clearly reaching saturation in the domestic market.

Netflix’s ties with Latin America and the region’s much-loved telenovela format go back to the company’s first steps in original production outside of the U.S., when the streamer picked, as its first international original, Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s “Club of Crows,” a soccer-themed soapy drama about a dynastic sports ownership family.Since then, there have been several further incursions into the world of the novela, including some of the streamer’s most popular ever series such as “Who Killed Sara,” currently filming its third and final season, and “Café con Aroma de Mujer,” “Rebelde” and “The Queen of Flow,” the top three non-English language series on Netflix globally at the time of this article’s publishing, sure to be joined by the second season of “Dark Desire” when it launches on Feb. 2.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Zack Snyder appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” and championed his recent pivot to Netflix. The 58-year-old filmmaker spent the bulk of his career making movies at Warner Bros., but he made the jump to streaming starting with the 2021 release of his zombie action movie “Army of the Dead.” Snyder’s latest Netflix original was “Rebel Moon,” which debuted in December and kicked off a new space saga for the streaming giant. A second “Rebel Moon” film arrives this spring.

EXCLUSIVE: Stand-up comic Deon Cole is set to return to Netflix with a third hour-long comedy special, to premiere later this year. While a title and logline haven’t been shared, he’ll tape his new hour at the LA Theater on May 2nd, as part of Netflix Is A Joke Fest 2024.

HOLLYWOOD – On Wednesday evening, in Netflix’s star-filled (literally) Tudum theater, the top execs of the world’s streaming giant met the press to discuss their 2024 television programs and films. Timed to the release of a new video preview that debuted this morning, the presentation featured exclusive first looks at series such as Gut Ritche’s “The Gentlemen” and films that will only stream on Netflix like the long-awaited “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” And, at the center of the event was Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria.

EXCLUSIVE: Artist International Group, the globally minded management and production company founded by David Unger, on Thursday announced its signing of Umut Aral, the award-winning director behind the hit Turkish-language Netflix series, Who Were We Running From?.

Naman Ramachandran Srishti Behl Arya, director, international original film at Netflix India, is leaving the streamer after more than three years. She reported into Netflix VP of content for India, Monika Shergill.During her time, Behl Arya greenlit more than 35 Hindi-language features including “Guilty,” “AK vs AK,” “Bulbbul” and “Serious Men,” and the service’s first Tamil and Telugu-language films, “Paava Kadhaigal” and “Pitta Kathalu.”Her last day with Netflix will be May 21.

Israeli actor and screenwriter Lior Raz may not be a household name in America, but obviously, Netflix doesn’t care, they’ve got a global market to be concerned with, and clearly, the algorithm favors him. People are watching the things Raz has helped create, like the Israeli political thriller television series “Fauda,” which is a hit and he co-created.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s “Nyad” will be the opening night film of the Hamptons International Film Festival. The event will take place on Oct. 5, according to HamptonsFilm, which runs the festival.

Disney Hires Netflix EMEA Exec Emma Smart Disney has recruited Emma Smart, Netflix’s London-based director of business affairs for original series, as its VP for business affairs, originals. Smart will report to Diego Londono, Disney’s EVP, media networks and content, negotiating UK-based original productions, as well as having oversight of European production deals.
