Director Pablo Berger never thought he’d earn his first Oscar nomination for an animated feature, mostly because he never thought he’d direct animation. That is, until one morning, when he was looking through his vast library of books and decided to read Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel Robot Dreams, the bittersweet story of the friendship between a dog and a robot. As soon as he put down the book, the multiple Goya-winning Spaniard knew he’d found his next film. That chance reading led to a premiere at Cannes, multiple awards and an Oscar nomination — all for a movie that hasn’t even seen its main U.S. release yet.

They recruit Sam, a young and feisty car racer (Bresch) to assist them with one last job, but quickly clash with their godmother’s will (Adjani).
Is the rom-com genre in a Renaissance period? Maybe, maybe not, but “Anyone But You” did alright with critics late last year, and so did “No Hard Feelings,” “Rye Lane,” and even “She Came To Me.” So of course Netflix wants in on the action with “Players,” its latest genre entry that’s ready to premiere on Valentine’s Day next month. Murtada Elfadl What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier. As Owen Browning, Adam Devine takes the mantle from Sandler to play a schlubby everyman partnered with a gorgeous woman (Nina Dobrev) out of his league. Naturally, he’s kind-hearted and willing to sacrifice all for his one true love. And that’s how the audience knows he’s worthy of her. On the week of their wedding, her long-absent parents (Ellen Barkin and Pierce Brosnan) show up after many years of estrangement. It’s quickly revealed that they were in hiding from their former partner (Poorna Jagannathan), after relieving her of large sums of money. Conveniently, their future son-in-law manages a bank, and so a scheme is set in motion. This being a comedy, no one will get hurt and the sweet guy will keep his beautiful woman.

Selome Hailu Nostalgia and comfort watches always have their place on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, with shows like “NCIS” and “Gilmore Girls” regularly holding their own in competition with new hit series. During the June 19-25 viewing window, a new-old favorite took the No. 1 position: “Suits,” the USA Network legal drama that concluded in 2019 and recently landed on Netflix. “Suits” was watched for 2.3 billion minutes during this viewing period, which marked the first full week that the series has been available on Netflix — though it should be noted that “Suits” was already available on Peacock, and this statistic indicates viewership across both streamers. This is the first time in nearly four months that a title has crossed the 2 billion minute mark on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, with the most recent winner of that achievement being “The Night Agent” with 3.1 billion minutes watched from March 27 to April 2. And that happens even less with titles acquired from other networks, rather than streaming originals — “Manifest” was the last with 2.5 billion minutes watched from June 21-27 of 2021.
Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Shares of Netflix were down more than 8% in early trading Thursday, coming after the streamer blew away estimates on subscriber gains for the second quarter — and analysts saying the company continues to be well positioned to weather Hollywood’s double actors and writers strike relative to its peers. But investors had been anticipating a bigger bump from its new initiative to monetize password-sharing accounts. Note that Netflix’s post-earnings stock drop came amid high investor expectations leading into the Q2 report: Shares were up nearly 62% year to date in 2023. Revenue for Q2 came in at $8.19 billion, shy of Wall Street’s $8.3 billion consensus expectations. And Netflix’s guidance for Q3 revenue of $8.52 billion also was less than the $8.9 billion average forecast by analysts. The company added 5.9 million net new subs in the second quarter, more than double expectations, and said it expects to add about the same number in Q3.
Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters said the initial verdict is in on paid password sharing — a risky but multi-billion-dollar initiative for the company — and it is positive.
Ted Sarandos wants striking writers and actors to know he is a union man through and through, and he feels their pain – even as Netflix and other studios and streamers have no plans to restart talks with either the WGA or SAG-AFTRA anytime soon.
Netflix has found itself with cash to spend thanks to the writers and actors strike.
Netflix added 5.9 million global subscribers, reaching 238.3 million, with password sharing pushing subscribers to the months-old $7-a-month plan with advertising.
Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Netflix reported its second-quarter 2023 earnings Wednesday, revealing its subscribers increased by 5.89 million in the quarter ended June 30. At the end of Q1, Netflix’s global subscriber count was 232.5 million. Analysts had project the streamer gaining 1.769 million new subscribers in Q2, which saw Netflix begin notifying customers in the U.S. and other countries that users on their accounts who live outside their households would need to be added as an “extra member” (or pay for their own subscriptions). Wall Street forecast earnings per share (EPS) of $2.86 on $8.3 billion in revenue, according to analyst consensus data provided by Refinitiv. Netflix reported diluted EPS of $2.88 on $8.2 billion in revenue.
Netflix continues to tinker with its subscription plans, yanking its basic $9.99 ad-free offering. That leaves its new $6.99 advertising plan, its $15.49 ad-free plan and its $19.99 premium plan, according to the streamer’s sign-in page.
