Woody Allen Is Not Retiring After All But He Is Unhappy About Current State Of Film Distribution

Lori Stokes’ retirement means that, for the first time in more than 20 years, viewers in the tri-state area will arise Monday morning without seeing her familiar face on their TV screens.Stokes has officially ended her New York City broadcasting career, which started at WABC/Ch. 7 in 2000 and ended Friday with her final broadcast on WNYW/Ch. 5 which she joined in 2017 — co-anchoring“Good Day New York” with Rosanna Scotto; starting in June 2021, she anchored the station’s 5, 6 and 10 p.m.

K.J. Yossman MetFilm is expanding into distribution with the acquisition of U.K. distribution company Republic Film Distribution (“Brittany Runs a Marathon”). Republic, which is run by former Icon Films exec Zak Brilliant, will be re-branded as MetFilm Distribution. Brilliant will take on the role of head of MetFilm distribution and MetFilm sales, working with the existing sales team, comprised of Mitch Clare, Jenny Bohnhoff and Ella Pham. The company is already planning to increase its headcount. MetFilm Distribution will aim to release six to eight titles annually. The films they take on will have a strong theatrical focus, starting with November’s “A Bunch of Amateurs” by Kim Hopkins, which won the Sheffield DocFest audience award.

MetFilm has acquired Republic Film Distribution, the UK distribution company run by former Icon Films executive Zak Brilliant.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent After “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen will return to the French capital for his 50th movie which he’s described as a “poisonous romantic thriller” with a pair of French stars, Valerie Lemercier (“Aline”) and Niels Schneider (“Love Affair(s))”. The untitled film, the plot of which is being kept under wraps, will start filming next month and will be entirely in French with a budget in the $10-million range. Allen has described the film to be similar to “Match Point,” in that it would be “exciting, dramatic and also very sinister.”  Allen sparked headlines earlier this week after Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia ran a story reporting that the New York-based filmmaker had told them he was planning on retiring. Allen’s representative then issued a statement saying that the director had “no intention of retiring.”

But on Monday, a spokesperson clarified that Allen “never said he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel.” “He said he was thinking about not making films, as making films that go straight or very quickly to streaming platforms is not so enjoyable for him, as he is a great lover of the cinema experience,” read a statement from Allen’s rep. “Currently, he has no intention of retiring and is very excited to be in Paris shooting his new movie, which will be the 50th.”The spokesperson’s statement echoes comments that Allen made in June during an Instagram Live interview with Alec Baldwin.
