A woman who admitted murdering her sister in a brutal blade attack has been jailed for life with a minimum period of 18 years behind bars. At a court appearance in May, Marie Metcalfe, 41, denied the murder of her older sibling Laura, 44, in Hartlepool in April.

Laura, who had lived in Scotland for 18 years before moving back to her Hartlepool hometown in 2022, was stabbed on a street on Friday, April 7. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with cops saying she was suffering from "injuries caused by a bladed article."

Metcalfe, who had been in conflict with a number of her siblings over the years, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. This was later upgraded to murder, which she initially denied, following her sister's death.
On the night of the stabbing, Laura had allowed a friend, Kelly Nicholson, to stay with her. However, Nicolson turned up drunk and Laura told her to walk it off and return when she sobered up.
Prosecutor James Hill told the court that Laura, who then went out with another pal, returned home to find Nicholson “kicking at the front door”. When confronted, she left to go to Metcalfe's, with the pair then heading to a nearby corner shop.
The court heard that after
