A woman was rescued from a canal by firefighters who got into the water to save her. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene in Leigh, Wigan, on Thursday afternoon and she was taken to hospital by paramedics.
There's been no confirmation of her condition, but the Manchester Evening News understands that thankfully she was conscious and breathing at the scene.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were called to 'reports of a person in the water' on Atherleigh Way in Leigh, a stretch of which runs over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
A specialist technical response unit and the water incident unit based in Eccles, Salford, also attended the scene at around 4.15pm today. Firefighters wearing dry suits rescued her from the water as North West Ambulance Service paramedics waited and she was taken to hospital.
In a statement, a GMFRS spokesperson said: "At around 4.15pm today, Thursday, 16th March, firefighters were called to reports of a person in the water of the canal on Atherleigh Way in Leigh.
"Two fire engines from Farnworth and Bolton, along with the technical response unit and a supporting fire engine from Ashton-under-Lyne and the water incident unit from Eccles fire stations quickly arrived at the scene.
"On arrival, crews discovered one casualty in the water. Firefighters wearing dry suits rescued a woman from the water, who was transferred to the care of the North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.
"Firefighters were at the scene for around 40 minutes." No further details have been revealed.
