Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Some people look back at their high school years with a certain wistfulness; others couldn’t be paid to revisit that particular stretch of adolescence… thank you very much. Filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson falls squarely in the latter category, though she admits she’s at least partially to blame for the bad memories. “I was a bitch,” she says with the kind of laugh that only comes after years of self-reflection. “I was unhappy, so that came out by me paying that unhappiness forward. I love my family… but they can only do so much.” Robinson, now in her thirties, is happily revisiting her teen angst in “Do Revenge,” a Hitchcockian high-school comedy that debuts Sept. 16 on Netflix. It’s a welcome return to the YA genre for Robinson, who most recently co-wrote this summer’s blockbuster “Thor: Love and Thunder” with Taika Waititi. She first made her mark on streaming with Netflix’s “Someone Great,” a funny and touching ode to love and female friendship, starring Gina Rodriguez.
When Robinson was putting the final touches on “Someone Great,” which premiered to acclaim in 2019, she spent her downtime watching a different Netflix rom-com, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” That high school-set story, which also struck a chord with young, cordless viewers, got Robinson thinking about the campy teen movies of her formative years, like “Cruel Intentions,” “Clueless,” “Jawbreakers” and “Heathers.” She recalls thinking, “Damn, this movie just doesn’t get made anymore.” “Do Revenge” is the director’s candy-coated attempt to fill that void. Though Robinson, like the movie’s main characters, attended a posh prep school in south Florida, the movie isn’t exactly autobiographical. Instead, her

EXCLUSIVE: Tony Award-winner and five-time Tony nominee Laura Benanti will be starring opposite Jennifer Lawrence in the Sony R-rated comedy No Hard Feelings from director Gene Stupnitsky.
Today is Tudum day: Netflix‘s annual flex where the streamer shows off the goods for upcoming films; new teasers, posters, trailers, first looks, announcements, and more. And much of the day was dedicated to impressive-looking action films like “Extraction 2“ and a new Jennifer Lopez-starring assassin movie called, “The Mother.“ The director behind “The Mother” is Niki Caro, known for the spectacular action she brought to Disney‘s live-action version of “Mulan.
“Do Revenge” brought colorful chaos to Netflix screens last weekend in more ways than one. Eleanor Levetan (Maya Hawke) and Drea Torres (Camila Mendes) team up to do each other’s revenge, switching targets so that Drea goes for Eleanor’s bully while Eleanor goes for Drea’s ex-boyfriend Max Broussard (Austin Abrams).

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic African American boxing champ Muhammad Ali famously refused to fight for his country, justifying himself with the oft-quoted quip, “No Viet Cong ever called me n—–.” That’s one-half of American history, and an important one. “Devotion” tells the other, presenting the story of a Black pilot so determined to defend — and die for, if need be — the United States that he was willing to endure institutional bigotry to become the Jackie Robinson of the skies: Jesse Brown, the first aviator of color to complete the Navy’s basic training program. A square but satisfying social justice drama set against the backdrop of the Korean War, “Devotion” impressed on the biggest screen possible at the Toronto Film Festival two months before its Nov. 23 theatrical release. Featuring elements of both “Green Book” and “Red Tails,” the film is more than just a stirring case of Black exceptionalism; it also celebrates the one white officer who had Brown’s back, Tom Hudner, treating the bond these two men formed as something exceptional unto itself. Director JD Dillard dazzles with see-it-in-Imax airborne sequences, but the meat of the film focuses on the friendship between Brown (“Da 5 Bloods” star Jonathan Majors) and his white wingman, played by Glen Powell, the “Hidden Figures” actor who most recently appeared in “Top Gun: Maverick.”
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s delicious and devious “Do Revenge” takes place firmly in the larger-than-life high schools of movies, cleverly established here by its grossly-rich prep school and their uniforms of light pink, mint green, and purple. Every party scene is a shiny extravaganza with a dress code, looking more like junior “The Wolf of Wall Street” than what you probably experienced.
Is any race for a nomination in this category moot? Has Steven Spielberg already won it for his personal, Hollywood industry-friendly drama “The Fabelmans”? Possibly, but not probably. The Director’s branch of the Academy has become one of the most international of all the branches.
Nicholas Galitzine (Purple Hearts) has been tapped to star alongside Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway in Prime Video’s film The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s bestselling contemporary love story of the same name, which goes into production in October.

Collider in 2020, would’ve had Constantine trying to identify a prisoner who turns out to be a reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Reeves will next be seen in “John Wick: Chapter 4” and will star in the Hulu series “Devil in the White City.” He also recently voiced Batman in Warner Bros.’ “DC League of Super-Pets” and reprised his role as Neo in “The Matrix Resurrections.” Lawrence is currently filming the next “Hunger Games” movie “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which should arrive next year and is a prequel to the original “Hunger Games” franchise.
“Do Revenge” could not be more different from his role in “Euphoria” as Ethan Lewis. And for a little bit, Abrams went back and forth between shooting the new Netflix movie (now streaming) and Season 2 of Sam Levinson’s HBO drama.“It was really fun to go from a very nice, gentle, thoughtful guy to [an] egomaniac,” he said in an interview with TheWrap about his “Do Revenge” character.
