William Shatner to Unveil Documentary About Himself at San Diego Comic-Con

Comic-Con is finally returning for its first full-on, in-person con in three years. The team behind the biggest fan convention in North America says it’s “burning the midnight oil” to get ready for Comic-Con, which begins with its traditional “preview night” at the San Diego Convention Center on Wednesday and runs through Sunday.On Friday, Amazon Prime Video will continue its year-long marketing effort with a panel for its upcoming fantasy epic series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Not to be outdone, on Saturday, HBO will debut its first look at the “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” Paramount+ will have a panel for three of its “Star Trek” series: “Strange New Worlds,” “Lower Decks,” and “Picard.” And to cap off things late Saturday afternoon, Marvel Studios is expected to make another blockbuster presentation of its upcoming slate, including expected first looks at “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

San Diego Comic-Con is back with plenty of star-studded panels as it resumes in-person events for the first time in two years, from Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, July 24. While the schedule may not be as jam-packed as past years, there are still plenty of big studios, networks and celebrities participating in Comic-Con 2022. Among the many highlights are Warner Bros. bringing Dwayne Johnson and Zachary Levi to discuss and while the rumor mill is churning over what Marvel Studios will reveal during its presentation.But the two biggest panels, perhaps, belong to TV's most buzzed about new series,  on Prime Video and on HBO. Both networks are bringing many of members of its ensemble cast and creative team to offer fans a preview of what's to come from their sci-fi/fantasy sagas. Below is a schedule of just some of the most notable and anticipated panels, with the list being updated daily with major news and highlights.

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeFox is bringing “Krapopolis,” its new animated series from “Community” creator and “Rick and Morty” co-creator Dan Harmon, to San Diego Comic-Con next week — where audiences where get their first peek at the upcoming show.That presence will include an outdoor activation at the the Children’s Museum Park (in front of the San Diego Convention Center), as well as a Comic-Con panel, the launch of an Instagram game, artwork on the side of the Omni Hotel, and merch — sold in partnership with Toddland — at Fox’s booth on the convention floor.Set in mythical ancient Greece, “Krapopolis” is set to premiere on Fox in 2023 and centers “centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.” The show features the voices of Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Richard Ayoade (“The IT Crowd”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in The Shadows”), Pam Murphy (“Mapleworth Murders”) and Duncan Trussell (“The Midnight Gospel”). Harmon, executive producer and showrunner Jordan Young, supervising director Pete Michels and stars Berry, Murphy and Trussell, will be a part of the comedy’s Comic-Con panel (moderated by Variety TV editor Michael Schneider) in room 6BCF at the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday, July 23, at 2:45 p.m.

After a two-year in-person hiatus due to Covid, San Diego Comic-Con is raging back with a big footprint by streaming (Amazon Studios’ Prime Video, Apple, HBO Max, Paramount+), TV and, well, as far as big screen feature films, let’s just say they’re creeping back.

Dwayne Johnson will attend San Diego Comic-Con for the first time ever this month, bringing his upcoming  film to the event's largest stage. The new DC Comics movie released its first trailer earlier this year and will likely offer a second glimpse of the film at the July panel. «Boys and girls and children of all ages,» Johnson said in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday.

“Black Adam” will be showcased in San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, ahead of the film’s October release. He also said that he’ll be joined by The Justice Society of America as featured in the film, including “Noah Centineo, Quintessa Swindell and Aldis Hodge, as well as director Jaume Collet-Serra.
