Disney Fired Marvel’s Victoria Alonso Because Her Work on Oscar Nominee ‘Argentina, 1985’ Violated Contract

Adam B. Vary Senior Entertainment Writer Victoria Alonso’s work as a producer of the Oscar-nominated feature film “Argentina, 1985” is coming under greater scrutiny as a major factor in Disney’s decision to fire the longtime Marvel Studios executive for cause, according to three sources with knowledge of Alonso’s exit. At issue, according to these sources, was Alonso’s 2018 employment contract with Disney that prohibited her from working on projects for any rival studios. “Argentina, 1985” — which tracks the real-life trials of the country’s final dictatorship — was produced in part by Amazon Studios, which released the film on Prime Video in October. But Alonso, who was born and raised in Argentina, did not alert Disney to her work on “Argentina, 1985” in advance, sources say.

‘20,000 Bees,’ ‘Sica,’ ‘Girl Unknown,’ ‘Upon Entry’ Energize Malaga Fest Competition

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Running March 10-19, and now hosting the Spanish Screenings, the Malaga Film Festival is now firmly established as Spain’s biggest movie event in the early part of the year. Strategically positioned fairly sharp on the heels of the Berlinale, the Spanish event offers top Spanish titles at the German festival the chance to consolidate their reputations while often producing new discoveries, especially from first-time directors.  Many titles, from a Spanish film industry whose younger directors are highly social conscience and favor art-house, are issue driven.  “There’s a search for identity, whether a young trans girl’s exploration of gender identity or young leads to understand the world they live in, or the search for love and a sense pf strangeness, of being a stranger to oneself,” Juan Antonio Vigar, Málaga Film Festival director said of this year’s main Competition. Following, a brief breakdown of its titles.

Andrew Weissmann on What ‘Argentina 1985’ Shows Us About Why Donald Trump Should Be Criminally Prosecuted

Andrew Weissmann We are in a unique moment in American history. There are currently four criminal investigations into the former president of the United States: two federal, one in Georgia, and one in New York. This novel situation has led to a debate not just in the walls of academe but amongst the citizenry as to whether prosecuting a former president will reduce our country to a so-called banana republic, or whether the very act of not prosecuting the former president would lead to that result. And just as important, how will Jack Smith, the designated Special Counsel in charge of the federal Trump investigations, weigh this issue in deciding whether or not to bring charges? Will the collateral consequences to the country be considered at all, and if so, which way will they cut, for or against prosecution?
