Manchester United are yet to make a signing in the January transfer window, but speculation continues to link the club with moves for two players in particular.
Denis Zakaria and Amadou Haidara are the duo in question, with both tipped for switches to England from Germany due to Ralf Rangnick's background in Bundesliga football.
The former has a contract at Borussia Monchengladbach that is due to expire at the end of the season, making him a cut-price option for clubs this mont, and the latter has played under Rangnick in the past for RB Leipzig.
The rumours make sense, especially considering United's (lack of) depth in the middle of the park at the moment, but questions should be asked regarded whether Zakaria and Haidara are truly suited to addressing the team's current issues.
For some time, United have been desperate for a true holding midfielder.
Zakaria and Haidara would provide options for Rangnick, but both players are inclined to get forward on occasion, similar to Scott McTominay.
Zakaria has a reputation for occasionally showcasing explosive runs in the German top-flight, and Haidara is very much in the box-to-box mould. The Malian actually scored against United in the Champions League last season.
Nemanja Matic is the only natural holding player in the current United squad, and he'll be 34 by the time next season starts. The Serbian can't play every week, but the number of star attackers in the Old Trafford armoury mean he is often called upon to bring balance to the side.
Zakaria and Haidara are capable of offering specific perks for Rangnick to harness but if United wish to add a true holding midfielder to their ranks, they should probably look elsewhere.
